The Ben Avery Shooting Facility is one of the largest publicly operated shooting facilities in the country. Our world-class shooting range is a City of Phoenix Point of Pride and has received a Five Star rating from the National Association of Shooting Ranges. Located on 1,650 acres in north Phoenix, the Ben Avery Shooting Facility averages more than 240,000 shooters per year. The facility offers a fun and safe environment for shooters of all experience levels and strives to provide a quality recreation experience for all users.
Description of Duties: This position will serve as the day-to-day manager of the Ben Avery Rifle and Pistol Range including management of staff, customer service, ensuring adequate staff levels to meet customer needs, facility maintenance, user groups, emergency situation coordination, Gemba Walks, and other administrative functions.
-Supervise, coach, develop, engage employees and conduct other employee relation activities.
-Directly supervises the public range supervisor, range masters and range assistants and indirectly additional range masters and volunteers.
-Oversees an annual operational budget of $2.5M or more which includes $1.2M in program income, construction projects, range landscaping needs, facility maintenance, user groups, and management of a volunteer cadre of nearly 100.
-Responsible for and assists in developing business goals and metrics, customer service and experience objectives, budgets and requests, grant objects and compliance, business strategy implementation, and project prioritization.
-Review, develop, implement and ensure adherence of policies and procedures, range rules, BMPS and other processes for employee and customer health and safety.
-Develop employees by identifying needs, providing necessary training or learning opportunities to meet the requirements of their current duties, while continuing to provide growth opportunities for their current position or future aspirations.
-Handle and resolve customer complaints, ADA accommodations request and needs, employee, volunteer, vendor, camp hosts, user group and other customer conflicts, issues and problems.
-Provide assistance in the coordination and management of the BASF's Rifle and Pistol Range's volunteer program, over 175 user groups, contractors and vendors, along with building relationships with other Government Agencies, NGOs and businesses for continued shooting sports growth.
-Performs other duties as assigned
The candidate will have knowledge of administration and business management; shooting range development and best management practices; shooting sports, hunter education and firearms safety /education programs; State and Federal laws; effective leadership and management methods. The candidate will be skilled in budget administration; effective employee supervision, management and development; building relationships with a wide range of customers, including user groups, contractors, vendors and advertiser/sponsors; critical thinking; writing and communication; customer service techniques and relations. The candidate will have the ability to mentor staff; establish priorities and effectively delegate responsibilities; communicate effectively; identify risk; do repairs/maintenance and landscaping; work cooperatively and collaboratively to establish and maintain professional relationships; resolve internal and external conflicts.
The preferred candidate will have Bachelors degree in business or public administration, or business or recreation management. Equivalent experience gained through supervisory and management, budget administration, and program management may substitute for the degree. Experience in shooting range management, operations and development, hunting and shooting sports related activities and outdoor recreation management is a plus.
A level 1 fingerprint clearance card is required. Must be able to legally possess a firearm in accordance with 18 U.S. Code § 922(g). Baseline blood lead and zinc levels and a baseline hearing test will be conducted on an annual basis.
If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked or suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
