The Statistical Analysis Center serves as the research program for the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission (ACJC), providing statistical and analytical support to inform evidenced-based criminal justice programs and practice and to drive data informed policy development. The work of the SAC directly supports the ACJC’s mission to improve, sustain, and enhance public safety in the State of Arizona through the coordination, cohesiveness, and effectiveness of the Criminal Justice System, by providing critical research to assess, measure, and evaluate the criminal justice system. The SAC collects and disseminates research and statistics that inform criminal justice program and policy decisions.
Under the direction of the senior staff, the Research & Statistical Analyst position will assist in the collection, processing, analysis, interpretation, summarization, and dissemination of data for a particular research study or group of studies. This position also has responsibility for assisting senior staff in developing and conducting programmatic evaluations and related activities
This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.
• Assists with preparing technical reports, research papers, expository articles, and other user-friendly packaging methods for dissemination of information to stakeholders and the general public
• Assists with the development and implementation of research projects of relevance to the agency and Arizona’s criminal justice system
• Assists in the collection of statistical information from various agencies and stakeholders at all levels of the criminal justice system
• Perform or assist with qualitative and quantitative data collection, data entry, data processing, and data management
• Presents research conducted by the SAC to criminal justice partners and citizenry, as required
• Perform or assist with data analyses, data interpretation, and data visualization
Knowledge of:
• Understanding of database structures, data warehousing concepts, data quality principles, data cleaning and transformation techniques, and data security and privacy best practices a plus
• Research process, including literature review, research design, data collection methodologies (qualitative and quantitative), data validation, and ethical considerations in research
• Proficiency in applying appropriate statistical techniques to analyze diverse datasets, interpret results accurately, and assess statistical significance
• Descriptive and inferential statistics, experimental design, sampling techniques, regression analysis, multivariate analysis, and hypothesis testing
• Demonstrates strong initiative and teamwork, including the willingness to go above and beyond to meet workload demands when necessary
Skills in:
• Gathering data from various sources, cleaning and preprocessing large datasets (handling missing values, outliers, inconsistencies), and transforming data into formats suitable for analysis and visualization
• Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in data analysis and visualization, such as R or Python, for data manipulation, statistical modeling, and creating custom visualizations
• Design and create effective and aesthetically pleasing charts, graphs, and other visual representations of data that clearly communicate insights to diverse audiences
• Building interactive and dynamic dashboards that allow users to explore data, track KPIs, and gain actionable insights efficiently
• Organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities when needed
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
Ability to:
• Communicate complex statistical findings and data-driven insights in a clear, concise, and understandable manner to both technical and non-technical stakeholders through reports, presentations, and dashboards
• Statistical software packages (e.g., SPSS, SAS), data visualization and dashboarding platforms (e.g., Tableau, Power BI), and database query languages (e.g., SQL)
• Collaborate with diverse stakeholders within and external to the agency
• Experience with Google Suite a plus
• A graduate degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, statistics, public policy/administration, or closely related area with a similar emphasis on research and data analysis
• A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, statistics, public policy/administration, or closely related area with a similar emphasis on research and data analysis
• At least one year of work experience in a professional setting
• Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.)
