We are looking for an outstanding Women Veterans Coordinator. This integral position serves as the primary advocate, liaison, and resource for women veterans, eligible dependents, and their survivors.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties:
  • Conducts outreach through events, community presentations, and social media to engage service members, veterans, their family members, and citizens to disseminate information and offer agency services and referrals. (This may include, but is not limited to, Stand Downs, Stand Ups, Veteran’s Courts, Pow Wows, Veteran Organization meetings, Expos, Assisted Living facilities, Nursing Homes.)
  • Advocates for the needs of women veterans with state and federal leadership
  • Coordinates with Legislative Liaison regarding needs and concerns of women veterans to state legislature, Governor’s Office, and veteran advisory boards
  • Represents women veterans at state, regional, and national veteran conferences and summits
  • Educates women veterans on state and federal benefits and services
  • Provides assistance or referrals for Veterans Administration (VA) claims, appeals, and benefits navigation
  • Reviews claim files after a VA rating action to determine the VA’s compliance with current laws, rules, and regulations as outlined in the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC) decisions, Title 38 Code of Federal Regulations, and other federal resources
  • Examines medical information including service medical records (SMRs), physical examinations, hospital reports, and post-operative reports, and compares the degree of residual disability with VA assignment for accuracy
  • Initiates formal appellant proceedings and/or advises claimants to take specific action to obtain a proper rating as necessary
  • Provides training to Veteran Benefits Counselors (VBCs) on women veteran focused issues
  • Attends all required education and training to obtain and maintain accreditation
  • Attends meetings with various VA and state personnel to keep abreast of policy changes and to offer input for process improvements
  • Develops and deploys surveys to assess the needs and concerns of women veterans
  • Collects and analyzes demographic and benefits usage data
  • Identifies trends and emerging issues to propose policy and program changes
  • Builds partnerships with Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs)
  • Collaborates with non-profit and community organizations to expand services for women veterans
  • Submits reports to supervisor summarizing activities, outreach, and key issues
  • Documents and shares best practices with other Sate Women Veteran Coordinators (SWVC)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • Interviewing techniques
  • Community resources for veteran referrals
  • Needs and problems of disabled and disadvantaged veterans
  • Judicial matters as they relate to the VA
  • General administrative/ office procedures

Skills in:

  • Effective written and verbal communications
  • Planning, organizing, and time management
  • Composing general correspondence, including proper formatting
  • Crisis management and problem solving skills

Ability to:

  • Learn and apply Title 38 U.S.C. and Veterans Administration regulations and manuals, policies and procedures to claims
  • Learn and apply other federal, state, and local programs, as well as a military specific programs to claims
  • Provide high-quality customer service
  • Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with internal and external contacts
  • Learn proprietary database programs pertinent to assignment
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Follow chain of command
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
Selective Preference(s):
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Services, Counseling, Public Administration, Behavioral Science or related field OR equivalent combination of military and professional experience
  • One (1) or more years of professional experience working with veterans in a social, human services, or advocacy capacity
  • Preference will be given to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who have a military discharge under honorable conditions.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Ability to obtain accreditation by the VA and certified proficient by the Arizona Department of Veterans Services within six (6) months from the date of hire, and thereafter obtain accreditation with the American Legion
  • Possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license
  • This position requires the ability to pass an extensive VA background check investigation and obtain a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card
