The Waste Program Division for the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is seeking applicants for an exciting opportunity for Environmental students to learn how we approach environmental science as a regulatory agency. Our Waste Program team helps drive the ADEQ mission: protecting and enhancing public health and the environment.
Intern Project/Outcome Expected from the Intern:
- State Management Action Plan (SMAP)
- Risk Plus Factors for non-active Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS)
- ADEQ Story Map or similar product for FUDS website landing page
- Federal, State and Local Government Interaction
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Drone data processing (optional)
This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements)

- Environmental Science Foundation: A strong background and understanding of environmental science principles.
- GIS Proficiency: A basic understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.

- Project Management: Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, meet deadlines, and provide attention to detail for data accuracy and completeness.
- Collaboration and Interpersonal Skills: The ability to work collaboratively with other interns, staff, and stakeholders in a diverse and inclusive environment, utilizing strong interpersonal skills for effective interaction.
- Computer Skills: Proficiency in computer software programs, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.
The intern will gain experience leading a project and gain the following from this internship:
- The intern project will consist of developing a SMAP and assisting with a reassessment of the FUDS Program. The project duties of the SMAP will include:
- Collaborating with leadership to develop the SMAP (workplan) skeleton.
- Conducting desktop and historical document research to identify data gaps (risk plus factors).
- Reviewing and summarizing historical technical records for inclusion in the SMAP.
- Assisting the GIS team with SMAP content design and the development of a Story Map or similar product.
- Potential for drone and imaging/resolution assistance with the GIS team (optional).
