This position serves as an independent member of the medical staff and functions as a Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP). The role provides inpatient psychiatric care to patients at the Arizona State Hospital and is responsible for comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment to support patient stabilization and recovery.
The practitioner leads a multidisciplinary treatment team and oversees the clinical team in the development and implementation of individualized treatment plans. This position collaborates with providers, patients’ families, guardians, and other stakeholders to develop and coordinate comprehensive discharge plans.
Responsibilities include prescribing medications; ordering laboratory tests and other diagnostic or therapeutic procedures through the electronic Physician Order Entry (CPOE) system; and completing all required documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The role also involves working closely with interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care and treatment, participating in hospital committees as needed, and assisting in the development and revision of hospital policies and procedures when required.
- Prescribes psychiatric medication and treatment and monitors care and progress towards treatment goals
- Conducts psychiatric evaluations, diagnosis and treatment of patients at the Arizona State Hospital.
- Provides leadership to multidisciplinary team in the development and implementation of treatment plan
- Completes required documentation in the electronic medical record
- Attends hospital committees and medical staff meetings
- Other duties as assigned as related to the position (typically 5% - 10%)
Knowledge of:
- Standard and practice in psychiatry including diagnosis of mental disorders and current knowledge of evidence based treatment for mental disorders.
- Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies.
Skill in:
- Array of psychiatric treatments including psychopharmacology, diagnosis and treatment of serious psychiatric conditions, skill in interpreting and evaluating laboratory tests
- Must have effective written and verbal communication skills, experience in leading a multidisciplinary team
- Written/verbal communication skills
- Typing, time management, decision making, problem solving, and conflict resolution.
Ability to:
- Work in a psychiatric facility and maintain a positive working relationship with all multidisciplinary team members
- Learn and adhere to policies and procedures

- Master of Science in Nursing is preferred.
- A State hospital employee must be able to obtain a valid level one fingerprint clearance card issued pursuant to A.R.S. 41-1758.07 or must apply for a level one fingerprint clearance card within seven working days after beginning employment.
- Must possess a current and valid license as a Nurse Practitioner from the Arizona state Board of Nursing. Master of Science in Nursing.
