The Tobacco Tax Compliance Specialist 2 performs basic tax research and customer service work for the Tobacco Tax Team by providing educational outreach to applicable taxpayers to ensure compliance with Arizona’s tobacco tax laws, statutes, rules, and regulations. This role is responsible for the review of tobacco tax returns and the processing of refunds and rebates, working with taxpayers to address payment issues, and providing timely
notifications to taxpayers regarding noncompliance, penalties, and license enforcement actions.
This position may be available for remote work within Arizona
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Electronic Tobacco Tax Reporting Processing:
- Processes tax refunds, rebates and redemptions; and addresses payment issues as assigned
applying statutory requirements and Department of Revenue policies and standards
- Processing tribal rebate cases within 1 day
- Processing product refund cases within 1 day
Service Delivery:
- Responds to taxpayer requests for assistance with questions and return preparation
- Proactively makes outreach efforts via phone, email, etc. to educate taxpayers on
tobacco tax law compliance
- Contacts taxpayers regarding discrepancies and/or missing documentation
Tax Filing Review, Research & Analysis:
- Reviews tobacco tax returns in a timely manner to ensure accuracy and compliance with Arizona tobacco tax laws, statutes, rules, and regulations
- Researches, analyzes, and applies applicable tax law appropriately to all cases, audits, and tax returns, as assigned
Program Support:
- Prepares reports, correspondence, memoranda, and technical documentation and
other materials
- Provides input to the development and enforcement of tax compliance procedures and policies
- Provides input to the production of relevant documents to the Attorney General's Office for use in enforcing Arizona tobacco
laws and obligations under the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement
Agency/Department Compliance & Continuous Improvement:
- Remains current on all laws, regulations, policies, and best practices related to taxation through regular engagement in activities such as: self-directed research, conferring with other practitioners and technical experts; subscriptions to
regulatory/legal/industry newsletters and briefs; membership industry associations and attendance at meetings/events; participation in training and others continuing education opportunities.
- Other duties as assigned as related to the position (typically 5% - 10%)
Any combination that meets the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA); typical ways KSAs are obtained may include but
are not limited to: a relevant degree from an accredited college or university such as Associate’s Degree (e.g., A.A.),
training, coursework, and work experience relevant to the assignment.
Minimum of six (6) months audit-related experience
Associates degree in Accounting or closely related field
Experience with Continuous Improvement, Six Sigma and/or LEAN
Bilingual in English/Spanish
