Job Summary:

The Senior Paralegal provides advanced litigation and case management support to the Legal Division, helping ensure efficient legal operations and compliance with applicable laws and procedures. This position requires strong organizational skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced legal environment.


This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties:

● Prepare legal documents, correspondence, pleadings, motions, and other case-related materials.
● Conduct legal research and draft memoranda on legal and factual issues.
● Coordinate court and administrative filings, ensuring compliance with deadlines and procedural requirements.
● Maintain case files, legal records, and the case management system.
● Review and process public records requests and subpoenas, including drafting responses.
● Assist with preparing certified records and appellate filings.
● Support discovery by organizing, reviewing, redacting, and producing documents for hearings and litigation.
● Participate in process improvement initiatives and support standard operating procedures.
● Train and provide guidance to Legal Assistants, including reviewing work products.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

• Legal concepts, terminology, principles, procedures, legal research methods, legal writing, and the use of statutes, codes, case law, and other legal resources.
• Administrative hearing and court rules, procedures, and filing requirements.
• Content, organization, and formatting of legal documents, pleadings, correspondence, and court filings.
• Understanding of the attorney-client relationship, including confidentiality, discretion, and ethical responsibilities.
• Case management software, Commission computer systems, and case management program objectives, standards, and procedures.


Skills in
• Conducting legal research and extracting information from statutes, codes, legal documents, and court decisions.
• Applying information from legal sources to prepare legal documents and support legal investigations.
• Drafting complex legal documents and correspondence with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong analytical, organizational, planning, multitasking, and time management skills. .

Ability to
• Organize, prioritize, and manage multiple assignments while meeting competing deadlines.
• Utilize automated case management systems and follow office procedures for maintaining and tracking legal records.
• Track court actions in multiple jurisdictions.
• Interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and legal authorities.
• Elicit and evaluate information during legal investigations. Plan, organize and execute training programs.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys, court personnel, government representatives, coworkers, clients, and the public.
• Work effectively in a fast-paced, challenging environment and adapt to changing priorities while maintaining a professional, positive, and collaborative attitude.
• Exercise sound judgment, maintain integrity, and handle confidential information with discretion.
• Interact courteously, ethically, and professionally with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders.
• Proofread legal documents and work products to ensure accuracy, completeness, and quality.

Selective Preference(s):

Certificate of Completion in a Paralegal Studies Program and 5 years applicable experience.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate Arizona driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

Retirement:

You will be eligible to participate in the state employee health/disability insurance plan, and you are required to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). ASRS participation may begin immediately or upon your 27th week of employment. Contributions are matched by the employer.
