Job Summary/Basic Function

The School of Agriculture at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position (#102060) in Fermentation Science at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The start date for the position is August 1, 2025.

The successful candidate will have practical knowledge of fermentation with specific expertise or experience in brewing, distillation, or the production of fermented foods (e.g., fermented meats, vegetables, or dairy foods) or industrial fermentation (e.g., nutraceuticals/enzyme manufacture, probiotics/prebiotics production, or biofuels/biomass fermentation).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and Funding: Secure external funds to establish and maintain a nationally recognized research program in fermentation science.
  • Teaching: Develop and teach traditional and online undergraduate and graduate courses in fermentation science.
  • Student Engagement: Engage with students through recruitment, mentorship, and advising of student organizations.
  • Industry Outreach: Foster relationships with industry partners and participate in local, state, and national fermentation/brewing/distilling organizations.
  • Teamwork: Work effectively and interact well with peers, students, constituent groups, and the general public. Demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills. 
  • Community Involvement: Actively participate in university and community events, promoting the field of fermentation science.

Required Education

A terminal degree in fermentation science, beverage science, fermentation microbiology, enology, biochemical engineering, food science, food engineering, or a closely related field is required by the appointment date.

Other Desirables

Applicants with experience in the following will receive special consideration:

  • brewing or distillation.
  • high-quality teaching experience, demonstrated through course evaluations and recommendations.
  • ability to conduct and publish agribusiness-related research, evidenced by presentation and publication record.
  • track record of attracting or potential to attract external funding.
