Duties and Responsibilities: The Adult Education Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring students receive high-quality academic instruction and support. The role encompasses the following duties:

Instructional/Teaching Performance:
• Utilize Innovative Teaching Techniques: Incorporate effective, equitable, and evidence-based instructional methods that engage adult learners.
• Lesson Planning: Develop and implement lesson plans based on entrance testing results and course syllabi.
• Classroom Instruction: Provide instruction, offer feedback, grade in-class assignments, and use technology to direct student learning.
• Time Management: Ensure students stay on task and meet deadlines for assignments and assessments.

Program/Instructional Management:
• Record Maintenance: Keep accurate student records, including grades, attendance, placements, and licensure statistics (if applicable).
• In-house Audits: Conduct internal audits of student records in alignment with the LCTCS Audit Guide, under the guidance of the Lead Instructor or Director/Dean.
• Policy Compliance: Maintain an up-to-date LCTCS ABE Policy Binder in the classroom.
• Deadline Management: Ensure all deadlines related to instructional management are met.

Support and Coaching for Adult Learners:
• Individualized Coaching: Conduct one-on-one meetings with students to assess needs, set goals, develop learning plans, and track progress.
• Academic Support: Assist students in enhancing study skills, time management, organization techniques, and understanding course material.
• Barrier Identification and Resolution: Identify challenges such as financial, personal, or familial barriers and connect students to the relevant support services.
• Motivation and Accountability: Encourage self-directed learning and accountability, helping students stay motivated and focused on achieving their goals.
• Early Intervention: Use data to identify at-risk students and implement proactive interventions to prevent academic setbacks.
• Collaboration with Faculty and Staff: Communicate regularly with instructors to discuss student performance, address concerns, and advocate for student needs.
• Group Workshops: Facilitate workshops on topics such as test preparation, study skills, career planning, and time management.
• Data Tracking and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of student progress and provide data-driven reports for program evaluation and improvement.

Cross-Training and Department Support:
• Cross-Training in All Department Areas: The Adult Education Specialist will be cross-trained to support all areas within the department, including administrative and programmatic functions. This flexibility will allow for enhanced program efficiency and responsiveness.
• Perform Other Tasks as Needed: The Adult Education Specialist will take on additional responsibilities or tasks as required to ensure the smooth operation of the department and support the needs of students, faculty, and staff.

Required Education: 

• Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
• Experience in teaching, training, and/or counseling adult learners
• Preferred experience in an Adult Education, K-12, or Special Education setting

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
• Strong Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate and build rapport with diverse learners.
• Adult Learning Principles: Understanding the unique challenges faced by adult learners and tailoring support strategies accordingly.
• Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Ability to identify obstacles and create customized strategies to help students overcome them.
• Goal Setting and Motivation: Expertise in guiding students to set achievable goals and motivating them throughout their educational journey.
• Cultural Competency: Sensitivity and awareness of cultural differences, with the ability to engage with diverse populations.
• Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work, or a related field.
• Experience: At least one year of experience working with adult learners, preferably in adult education or workforce development.
