The Opportunity
The Associate Head of School (Engagement) (AHoSN) is responsible to the School of Information Technology and to the Malaysia Campus for the provision of leadership and management within the School in the area of student engagement, positive & progressive academic staff culture, as well as external engagement and impact.
The AHoSN will champion the engagement initiatives with current, past (alumni) and future students, in line with the School’s strategic plans to have long-term synergistic relationships with its student population.
This also includes leading all industry, government and community relationships and initiatives. Working within Monash’s strategy framework to support key engagement objectives to build partnerships with individuals, government and other organisations, this position is to enrich our ability to innovate and apply our educational initiatives and/or research to make significant impact to our community, and to ensure outstanding enterprising capabilities and opportunities for students.
This position is a member of the School senior leadership team and is a contributor, in the area of specialisation, to the overall management of the School. This position will also chair the School’s Industry Advisory Panel.
The incumbent will be appointed to level D (Associate Professor) or E (Professor) depending on his/her experience and qualifications. Academics at this level may be appointed in recognition of distinction in their disciplinary area.
Key Responsibilities
In consultation with the Head of School and other key stakeholders, the Associate Head of School (Engagement):
- Lead, develop and implement the School’s student engagement, progressive staff engagement culture, as well as external engagement and impact plans, and contribute to the development and implementation of the University’s student engagement and external engagement strategies.
- Lead the School’s student (current, past and future) engagement initiatives, and ensure alignment of the School’s engagement initiatives with the University’s plans, policies and procedures. This includes building long-term relationships with prospective inbound student cohorts at their secondary schools, as well as maintaining lifelong relationships with past students (alumni).
- Chairs the School’s Industry Advisory Panel, participates in various School committees and represents the School in student and/or external engagement committees at the Campus level and various internal and external events to develop, implement, promote and review strategies designed to enhance engagement and impact
- Foster strong external relationships and linkages, and in so doing, position the School’s external engagement plan, programs and activities with industry, government and community groups, with enhanced opportunities for staff and student collaborations and exchanges.
- Reports annually to the Head of School and Deputy Head of School on the engagement performance and progress against engagement & impact plans and strategies
- Fosters a culture of performance improvement, reward and recognition, and progressive collegiate culture among academic staff within the School to achieve the University's academic performance objectives and standards
- Plans, manages and monitors resources effectively, including financial, staffing and infrastructure, to support School's overall delivery of engagement & impact outcomes
A level D/E academic is expected to:
- Contribute to / lead curriculum development, innovation, enhancement and quality assurance in the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum
- Develop and deliver innovative and excellent teaching, learning and assessment experiences for undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Conduct world class research, maintaining an active record of high quality publication, grants, and PhD student supervision
- Contribute to / lead the development and implementation of a research strategy for School of Information Technology consistent with the research priorities of Monash University Malaysia and Monash University
- Contribute to / lead the development of strong collaborations with other universities and with government, industry and/or civil society to drive research impact and educational excellence
- Play an active leadership role in the management of education, research and/or administration in the School, including coaching, mentorship, leadership and effective performance management
- Lead the School’s research in thematic areas
- Mentor junior staff in educational, research or career development matters
Key Selection Criteria
- Excellent leadership skills, including an ability to support and motivate staff
- Ability to conceptualise, plan and implement strategic developments within the context of broad plans
- Ability to plan, lead and manage change processes in the context of tertiary education
- Ability to manage resources within budget
- Experience in leading, managing and coordinating a broad range of academic functions in line with strategic objectives
- An outstanding academic background, including relevant academic qualifications: a doctoral qualification (PhD) or equivalent qualification
- High level consultative, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the demonstrated capacity to effectively work cooperatively and in partnership with diverse groups and to sensitively balance the requirements of each of these groups
- Understanding of and commitment to quality assurance, strategic planning, risk management, business process improvement and OH&S principles.
- A strong / outstanding record of successful and innovative curriculum development
- An outstanding record of teaching which demonstrates a commitment to educational innovation
- An excellent / outstanding research record, demonstrated by world class publications, grants and PhD supervision (for T&R position)
- A strong / outstanding record in research leadership including generating research income, leading major research projects and, where relevant, building research teams (for T&R position)
- Ability to promote the discipline internally within the university as well as externally, both nationally and internationally
- Eligible to register with the Malaysian Board of Technologists (MBOT) as a Professional Technologist
