Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director of Hameetman Career Center, the Assistant Director, Career Education and Advising is responsible for providing career education and advising to students and alumni. This role involves collaborating with multiple teams to develop strategies that enhance career preparation and expand access to employment and educational opportunities. The position integrates counseling theories into career development programs and oversees experiential learning and professional development initiatives. It also requires innovative thinking to customize career resources and offer effective advising across diverse disciplines. Additionally, the role includes managing projects and applying career assessment tools for strategic initiatives.

 

Job Duties

  • 40% - Career Advising and Education - Provide high-quality career advising to undergraduate students and alumni across various disciplines. This core responsibility requires specialized skills and is central to the role. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Curriculum Development - Develop curriculum for career education and job search preparation strategies. This task requires expertise in career development to effectively support students' career readiness - (Essential)
  • 15% - Collaborative Initiatives and Partnerships - Work with Employer & Alumni Engagement and other teams to develop talent pipelines, meet employer needs, drive campus initiatives, and enhance student exposure to diverse employment and continuing education opportunities. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Program Development and Integration - Incorporate counseling theories into career development programs to ensure a comprehensive and effective approach to student growth. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Experiential Learning Management - Manage and expand experiential learning and professional development opportunities, ensuring the continued success and growth of core programs. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Innovation and Systems Thinking - Develop and implement innovative frameworks for individualized career offerings to maintain the relevance and effectiveness of career services. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Career Assessments Implementation - Facilitate, review, and implement career assessments to assist students in identifying career paths and improving their professional skills. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Additional Duties - Perform other related tasks as needed, supporting the overall goals of the Hameetman Career Center. - (Essential)

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Human Resources or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of experience in a career services environment.
  • Experience in developing and implementing career-related programs and initiatives.
  • Proven ability to provide career counseling or advising and apply counseling theories in a career services setting.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Human Resources or a related field.
  • Experience in higher education, particularly in liberal arts or research institutions.
  • Familiarity with career assessment tools, such as MBTI, StrengthsFinder, or the Strong Interest Inventory, and the ability to use them effectively.
  • Established relationships with employers, industry professionals, or alumni networks to develop talent pipelines and create experiential learning opportunities.
  • Experience with career services technology platforms, such as Handshake, and a proven ability to innovate in program delivery.
  • Awareness of current labor market trends, job search strategies, and graduate school application processes. Familiarity with policies, procedures, and challenges in higher education, particularly related to career services.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google
    drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any
    combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing
    potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy. Strong
    commitment to a quality work product.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.
  • Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, inclusion & diversity.
  • Demonstrated skill in adapting to and performing work effectively in high-volume, high
    accountability, confidential environment with multiple and changing priorities.
  • Effective organizational, logistical, time management and planning skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks/projects simultaneously, prioritize and fulfill the functions of an office in a
    timely manner.
  • Ability to self-motivate and work independently.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership and training, and to work effectively and professionally
    across functions, disciplines, levels, and with diverse groups.
  • Knowledge of contemporary leadership and management methods to ensure employee success
    and achievement, and demonstration of related and applicable skills as evidenced by the ability
    to effectively direct, assess and evaluate performance of direct reports.
  • Ability to effectively design, define, describe and document job functions, responsibilities, tasks,
    and required qualifications associated with supervised positions, and the demonstrated skills in
    assessing candidates’ experience, knowledge, skills and abilities when hiring for vacant
    positions, ensuring the best choice of candidate.
  • Ability to provide employee development, training and opportunities for direct reports to
    demonstrate performance achievement and success; recognizing performance of both above
    standards and needs improvement and respond accordingly.
  • Skilled at communicating feedback verbally, in writing and electronically; and documenting performance via introductory and annual performance appraisals.
  • Skilled in developing and determining corrective employment/performance/behavioral
    strategies, as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute performance improvement plans, conducting disciplinary action and/or determining the appropriateness of employment continuation.

 

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE:  $68,640/yr-$70,000/yr

If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.  We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
