As a master-level HVAC systems technician III with our vital SCAD physical resources team, you’ll ensure that HVAC systems operate properly across the university's myriad buildings. You’ll install, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot complex commercial and residential heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems.
To support the department, you’ll:
· Diagnose complex electrical, mechanical, and control failures in commercial HVAC/R equipment (e.g., chillers, boilers, rooftop units, VRF systems, air handlers, and cooling towers)
· Perform high-level repairs, overhaul major system components, and complete advanced refrigerant recoveries and retrofits
· Utilize advanced diagnostic tools, thermal imaging, and digital gauges to analyze system performance and airflow
· Read and interpret complex blueprints, wiring diagrams, piping schematics, and technical specifications
As a highly skilled technician, you’ll:
· Lead the installations and retrofits of large-scale HVAC systems per engineering specifications, local building codes, and manufacturer guidelines
· Perform full system tests, adjustments, and balances (TAB) during initial startup and commissioning
· Oversee comprehensive preventative maintenance programs to optimize energy efficiency and prolong equipment life
· Program, calibrate, and troubleshoot Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems
· Identify energy-saving opportunities and recommend system upgrades or replacements to clients
You will also:
· Mentor junior technicians, lead complex field projects, and serve as a primary technical point of contact for clients
· Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to apprentice and mid-level technicians
· Serve as the lead technician on major field jobs to manage project timelines and quality assurance
· Conduct job-site safety audits and ensure team compliance with OSHA standards and local codes
Candidates must demonstrate:
· Excellent problem-solving, time management, leadership, customer service, and advanced diagnostic skills
· A strong commitment to safety and efficiency
· An ability to lift more than 50 lbs.
· Knowledge in hydronics, chillers, boilers, variable refrigerant flow (VRF), control logic, and DDC/BAS programming; familiarity with building automation systems (BAS)
· Comfort working in tight spaces, scaling ladders/roofs, and working in varying weather conditions
Minimum qualifications:
· High school diploma or GED with a technical school degree in an appropriate area
· At least seven years of hands-on experience in commercial and industrial HVAC service and repair
· Basic electricity knowledge
· Ability to understand the principles of air distribution and refrigeration cycles to correct problems
· Understanding of HVAC and electrical components, control systems, and what function they serve
Preferred qualifications:
· Commercial refrigeration and ice machine knowledge
· Associate degree or trade school certification in HVAC/R technology
· Local or state-level master HVAC license and specialized manufacturer certifications (Trane, Carrier, Daikin, or VRF systems)
· OSHA 10-or-30 certification
Certificates, licenses, and registrations:
· Valid driver’s license
· Clean driving record
· Valid refrigerant card
· Ability to be insured by the university’s insurance company to drive a vehicle
· Ability to pass the DOT medical exam
Travel required:
· Less than 10%
Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
