Professor, Interactive Design and Game Development

Apply now Job no: 502482
Work type: Faculty Full Time
Location: Savannah
Categories: Interactive Design/Game Development

SCAD Savannah seeks a full-time professor of interactive and real-time experiences to join the department of Interactive Design and Game Development. The ideal candidate is an innovation-minded designer, developer, or creative technologist with professional experience using real-time game engines to create engaging interactive products, mobile applications, games, simulations, or immersive environments. Experience with Unity is preferred, though candidates with strong experience in other real-time engines are encouraged to apply.

Candidates should possess a strong understanding of how interaction design, user experience design, and product-design practices inform the development of meaningful real-time experiences. The successful candidate will guide students through the full design and development process—from identifying opportunities, conducting research, and defining product goals to prototyping, user testing, developing, and deploying functional interactive experiences and minimum viable products.

We seek a creative, collaborative, and hands-on professor who can help students explore the possibilities of real-time engines across gaming and a range of other industries. Areas of application may include healthcare, education, automotive, enterprise, training and simulation, entertainment, product visualization, interactive storytelling, digital twins, spatial computing, and public-facing experiences.

The professor will teach students to create experiences for mobile, desktop, immersive, and emerging platforms. Candidates should be prepared to guide students in developing effective interactions, interfaces, systems, and user experiences within real-time engines while considering accessibility, usability, performance, platform requirements, and audience needs.

Professional experience developing augmented reality, virtual reality, or mixed-reality experiences is highly desirable. Experience creating mobile games or interactive applications for iOS and Android, including cross-platform development, performance optimization, touch-based interaction, testing, and deployment, is also valued.

Candidates should demonstrate an active interest in emerging technologies, including generative artificial intelligence and intelligent interactive systems. The successful candidate will help students critically and responsibly explore how AI can support ideation, rapid prototyping, content creation, procedural experiences, adaptive interaction, conversational systems, intelligent agents, and real-time behavior. Experience applying generative AI or machine learning within games, simulations, interactive products, creative workflows, or real-time environments is preferred.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable collaborating across design and technology disciplines and helping students move beyond static prototypes into functional, testable, and deployable experiences. Candidates should be confident with programming and scripting and able to help students understand how logic, data, interaction, and system behavior are implemented within real-time environments. Experience working with product designers, interaction designers, artists, developers, engineers, stakeholders, and subject-matter experts is particularly valuable.

With industry-standard technology and collaborative studio environments, SCAD provides exceptional opportunities for students to prepare for careers in interactive design, real-time development, emerging technology, product design, and experience design. The professor will join a supportive team of educators and industry professionals committed to helping a diverse student body develop technically accomplished, visually compelling, inclusive, and professionally relevant work.

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach courses in real-time engines, interactive systems, mobile development, immersive experience design, and emerging technologies.
  • Guide students from research and early-stage concepts through functional prototypes, user testing, iteration, and deployment.
  • Teach students to apply interaction design, UX, UI, product-design, and systems-thinking principles within real-time environments.
  • Help students create projects for mobile, desktop, XR, installation-based, and emerging platforms.
  • Support students with varied design and technical backgrounds as they develop confidence with programming, scripting, and real-time development.
  • Introduce responsible and purposeful uses of generative AI within creative, technical, and product-development workflows.
  • Encourage experimentation with real-time engines beyond traditional gaming, including applications in healthcare, education, enterprise, simulation, training, automotive, and other industries.
  • Provide constructive critique and mentorship that supports student learning, portfolio development, professional readiness, and career growth.
  • Collaborate with faculty across interactive design, game development, UX, product design, technology, and related disciplines.
  • Maintain current knowledge of professional practices, emerging technologies, and evolving real-time production workflows.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Professional experience developing interactive experiences, products, games, simulations, or applications using one or more real-time game engines.
  • Terminal degree in interactive design and game development or a relevant field.
  • Experience with Unity preferred.
  • Confidence with programming and scripting used to create interactive systems and real-time behavior.
  • Experience taking projects from concept and prototyping through testing, production, or deployment.
  • Knowledge of interaction design, user experience design, interface design, or digital product design.
  • The ability to communicate technical and design concepts clearly to students with varied levels of experience.
  • A demonstrated commitment to inclusive design, accessibility, creative problem-solving, and user-centered development.
  • Strong collaborative, communication, and mentorship skills.
  • Professional experience in interactive design, real-time development, product development, game development, creative technology, or a related field.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Unity development
  • Mobile game or interactive application development for iOS and Android
  • Augmented, virtual, or mixed-reality development
  • Spatial interaction and immersive experience design
  • Generative AI, machine learning, intelligent agents, or conversational systems
  • Real-time engine applications outside traditional gaming
  • Simulation, training, digital twins, product visualization, or interactive storytelling
  • Product strategy, UX research, usability testing, or human-centered design
  • APIs, cloud-connected applications, data-driven experiences, or live systems
  • C#, C++, Python, JavaScript, visual scripting, or related programming environments
  • Git, version control, and collaborative production pipelines
  • Collegiate teaching, professional training, mentorship, or curriculum development
