General Summary

The Honors College at Eastern Michigan University is looking to fill the role of Graduate Assistant for Student Success and Engagement. The individual in this role will be an active team member in the delivery of direct service to students in a range of student services. The candidate selected for this role will have the opportunity to work closely with the Honors team (administrators, faculty, staff, and students) on a variety of assignments, including but not limited to advising, student supervision, event planning, student programming, new student orientation, and academic support services. Other functions and responsibilities may be assigned based on The Honors College's needs and the selected candidate's interests. This position will help graduate students gain experience comparable to an entry-level professional in academic advising, student activities, and admissions offices.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Success Coaching and Academic Advising (50%, ~10 Hours Per Week).
  • Aid in administering advising programs designed for specific students, which involves advising Honors students on academic, career, financial, and graduate school preparation.
  • Assist in the planning and organization of comprehensive learning programs for Honors students (including university and Honors orientation), academic support services, student appointments, and cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Support the Honors College administration with Honors College recruitment among continuing EMU students.
  • Aid in new student recruitment efforts, including providing Honors tours and interacting with prospective high school and transfer students through EMU programs.
  • Represent the Honors College at meetings, conferences, orientations, and other events on campus as well as at targeted admissions programming.
  • Student Programming (50%, ~10 Hours Per Week). 
  • Planning, developing, and implementing a wide array of social, and community service opportunities and events for students in The Honors College.
  • Collaborating with Honors College administrative secretary to ensure programs have necessary supplies and staffing of student fellows and professional staff.
  • Functional supervision of a team of 3-4 Honors College student fellows.
  • This position will require occasional evening and weekend work.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate program, preferably in clinical mental health counseling, college counseling, education, higher education administration, student affairs, or other human services-centered field.

Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher is required.

Maintain a 67% course completion rate or higher is required.

Enrollment in at least 6 credits for Fall and Winter semesters is required.

Strong communication and presentation skills.

Ability to work within groups and independently.

Experience and commitment to work within a diverse, multicultural environment.

Ability to take initiative.

Flexibility in schedule.

Graduate Assistant is expected to work 20 hours each week.
