Job Summary/Basic Functions
The Transition & Intervention Counselor provides direct, proactive, and responsive support to students experiencing academic, personal, or financial challenges that may impact their ability to persist at EKU. This position serves as a key intervention specialist, working closely with faculty, academic advisors, financial aid, counseling services, and student affairs to assist students in overcoming barriers to success. By utilizing early alert systems, outreach strategies, and one-on-one coaching, the Transition & Intervention Counselor helps students navigate critical transitions (first-year, transfer, and re-enrollment) and provides targeted intervention efforts when students are at risk of disengaging or stopping out.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Higher Education, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred in Counseling, Higher Education Administration, Social Work, or Student Affairs. Experience can be substituted for specific degree requirements but not educational level. Minimum two years of experience in student success coaching, counseling, crisis intervention, or academic support services. Experience working with at-risk student populations, retention initiatives, or case management preferred. Strong understanding of student development, academic advising, and persistence strategies.

Job Duties:
- 40% - Provides one-on-one counseling and coaching for students facing academic, financial, or personal difficulties. Develops individualized intervention plans to help students overcome obstacles and persist in their academic journey. Serves as the primary contact for students flagged through early alert systems, conducting outreach and coordinating appropriate support services. Assists students with navigating university policies, academic resources, and financial aid options to remove barriers to persistence. - (Essential)
- 30% - Works with first-year, transfer, and returning students to ensure a smooth transition to EKU, identifying and addressing adjustment challenges. Provides structured coaching sessions, workshops, and engagement programming focused on resilience, goal setting, and academic success. Collaborates with faculty and student success teams to identify at-risk students early and implement intervention strategies. - (Essential)
- 20% - Coordinates intervention plans with academic advising, mental health services, financial aid, and tutoring to create a holistic student support system. Works closely with the Director of Transition & Intervention to track student progress, report intervention outcomes, and refine support strategies. Maintains accurate case notes and documentation, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to FERPA regulations. - (Essential)
- 10% - Conducts outreach to students on academic probation, those with financial holds, and students identified as high-risk for attrition. Develops communication strategies to connect with disengaged students and encourage re-engagement. Assists in the design and implementation of persistence initiatives, including peer mentoring, emergency assistance programs, and re-enrollment pathways. - (Essential)
