2025 Transition to Specialty Nursing Practice

Are you looking to broaden your specialty nursing experience? Apply now for our 12 month rotational programs in emergency medicine, ICU, general medicine and cancer services. Opportunities for permanent roles will be available at the end of the programs.

  • Employment Type: Temporary Full Time or Part Time until February 2026 (12-month programs)
  • Classification: Registered Nurse year 2 - 8
  • Remuneration: $35.33 - $49.60 per hour + superannuation + annual leave loading + salary packaging options + RDO's (if full time)

THE ROLES:

The Calvary Mater Newcastle Transition to Specialty Nurse Programs are aimed at nurses who have completed a minimum one year post graduate nursing experience and who have a genuine interest in speciality practice. The programs have been designed to assist Registered Nurses with their professional development during the transition phase from generalist nurse to specialist nurse.

The rotational program will be conducted over a 12 month period and will comprise both theoretical and clinical components. The rotation framework aims to provide an interactive learning experience that enables the participants to take a holistic view of nursing, gain specialised clinical skills, gain a better understanding of the services provided to patients and develop a network of professional resources.

PROGRAMS AVAILABLE:

Cancer Services Program

The Cancer Services Program will rotate through 4 distinct cancer services (inpatient oncology, inpatient haematology, outpatient chemotherapy and radiotherapy) and will comprise both theoretical and clinical components. Offering the flexibility of 32 hours per week or full-time.

The rotation framework provides an interactive learning experience that enables participants to gain a holistic view of cancer nursing, specialised clinical skills, a better understanding of the services provided to patients undergoing cancer treatment and develop a network of professional resources.

Emergency Medicine Program

The Emergency Medicine Program includes comprehensive face to face and self-directed training. The opportunity provides exposure to specialities such as oncology, haematology and clinical toxicology.

You will be supported in your learning journey by a designated mentor to treat and explore different models of care in the Emergency Department.  Offering the flexibility of 32 hours per week or full-time.

Acute Care Program

The Acute Care Program is designed for nurses who are passionate about Acute Care nursing, specifically in General Medicine, Palliative Care, and Coronary Care. This year-long program offers a unique opportunity to develop assessment and specialised skills in stroke care, cardiology, management of eating disorders and palliative/end of life care. You will rotate through four clinical units, receiving expert guidance, specialised learning opportunities, and dedicated educator support. With the flexibility to work 32 hours per week or full-time while maintaining a permanent position, this program is tailored to your professional development needs. Approved by the University of Tasmania, successful completion also provides credit toward the CNA533 Advanced Health Assessment in the Acute Care Nursing stream. Intensive Care Unit Program

Intensive Care Unit Transition to Specialty Program provides a personalised two weeks of supported orientation, 4 theoretical study days, simulation and self-directed learning components. Upon completing this program, you will be credentialed as an Advanced Life Support provider. The positions are offered for 32 hours per week and will include a 4-week rotation to the John Hunter Hospital.

ABOUT YOU:

To be considered for one of these opportunities you need to demonstrate:

  • Registered Nurse with current Authority to Practice with AHPRA
  • Completed minimum one year post graduate nursing experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to own personal and professional development
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with patients, families and other health care professionals
