THE ROLE:

We are seeking a Career Medical Officer (CMO) to join our emergency department with a difference. You will be responsible for the provision of safe, effective and appropriate patient centred medical care in a team based emergency department. At Calvary Mater Newcastle (CMN), the main point of difference for our emergency department is specialised focus on general medicine, oncology and haematology, palliative care, psychiatric and clinical toxicology presentations. 

If you are seeking a position as a CMO, working in a team who understands the complexity of balancing work and personal priorities, then this is the position for you. We are open to providing you with flexibility around your working hours, whether it is part time, weekends only, short shifts or school hours. We are also flexible to focus on your professional areas of interest such as seeing main floor patients and resuscitation level patients or only seeing the ambulatory care/fast track type patient or working primarily in our short stay ward managing short term emergency department admitted patients and discharge planning. There is room to expand on some non-clinical projects for the right candidate.

DUTIES:

  • Delivers all care within scope of practice as defined by practice setting and competence.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, carers and members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ensure that patients are discharged to a safe environment
  • Ensure that appropriate follow up arrangements are in place for patients being discharged home.
  • Coordinate and oversee deployment of resources within the department in conjunction with the nurse- in-charge to ensure that patients are seen within a timely manner

ABOUT YOU:

  • Medical Degree and currently registered with AHPRA.
  • Recent Emergency / acute care experience in a Base and/or Teaching Hospital.
  • Demonstrated high level of organisational, communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to consult with patients and their families, multidisciplinary health care team and broader internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and staff and non-clinical staff working in the Emergency Medicine/Critical Care area.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team and ability to work independently in a complex environment utilising skills, judgement and expertise to provide a high standard of patient care and broader internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and staff and non-clinical staff working in the Emergency Medicine/Critical Care area
  • Familiar with electronic HealthCare Systems
