About the role

Calvary John James Hospital (CJJH) runs a Perioperative Graduate Nurse Transition Program (GNTP) in an 8 operating theatre unit within the Deakin facility. The Perioperative GNTP supports the individual in developing principles of clinical practice that promote the transference of knowledge, skills and behaviour for life-long learning. Through support and reflection, the program will empower individuals to make well-informed evidence-based decisions throughout their career.

The GNTP has a strong emphasis in keeping with Calvary’s values of Hospitality, Healing, Stewardship and Respect. In practice Calvary recognises the worth of the individual, acknowledges talents and skills by providing support, education and mentoring to foster an atmosphere of ’Being for Others’.

Our program has been designed to develop you into a competent and confident Perioperative Nurse, to facilitate professional adjustment to the workforce, accentuate your adult self–directed learning skills and to develop a commitment to a career in nursing. This program consists of two streams/pathways either the Perianaesthetics stream or the Instrument & Circulating stream. The choice of stream is open to negotiation and subject to the candidate’s aptitude and future learning goals. There is no guarantee you will be placed in your first preference.

Enrolled Nurses will be placed on an adjusted program filtering through the Admissions & DSU departments within the perioperative unit. There is sometimes opportunity for ENs to rotate through the intraoperative space in either Perianaesthetics or Instrument & Circulating roles; however, this is dependent on the operational requirements and staffing ratios of the unit in the final 6 months of the program.
