Staff Specialist - Department of Medical Oncology

- Remuneration: $249,050 - $307,330 per annum + training and education allowance
 
- Temporary 12 month role at 1.0 FTE available 
 
 
The Calvary Mater Newcastle is an Affiliated Health Organisation providing services to both public and private patients primarily from the Hunter New England area. Our health services and clinics including Coronary Care and Cardiology, Surgery, Intensive Care, General Medicine, Research and 24/7 Emergency Care.
Our Medical Oncology Unit is one of the busiest adult cancer treatment facilities in NSW for medical oncology consultations and treatments with intravenous chemotherapy, immunotherapy and hormonal therapy for all types of cancers. This department is supported by large clinical trials facility, enabling patients to access trials of new medicines before they are widely available.
 
About the role
The purpose of the Staff Specialist in Medical Oncology is to provide clinical management and treatment of patients at the Calvary Mater Newcastle within the scope of practice granted by Hunter New England Health. The role includes admitting, consultative, diagnostic, procedural, outpatient and on-call speciality services and any other services as may be determined and required by the Department of Medical Oncology.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure a high standard of clinical record documentation is maintained, comprising the completion of the patient’s clinical records (including medication charts/orders) to reflect clinical decisions and changes to the management plan.
 
- All outpatient chemotherapy prescribing will be in the electronic prescribing system.
 
- Ensure appropriate arrangements are made for patients on discharge from hospital to maximise continuity of care and good health outcomes including appropriate communication with medical practitioners external to the organisation and providing detailed discharge summaries as may be required.
 
- Effective team work and ability to function within a multidisciplinary team while maintaining harmonious relations with hospital staff in a respectful and non-confrontational manner.
 
- Display sound interpersonal skills such as empathy, developing and maintaining positive relationships and social awareness.
 
- Ensure high standard of care for admitted Oncology inpatients and participate in Medical Oncology On-Call Roster.
 
- Participate in the triage of new patients to ensure timely Oncology review.
 
- Participate in education program within the department and hospital.
 
- Supervise and teach junior medical staff and transitional oncology nurse practitioners.
 
 
What you bring 
- Training and experience in Medical Oncology recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
 
- Commitment to a multidisciplinary-multispecialty team approach to cancer care.
 
- Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in medicine, nursing and allied health.
 
- Demonstrated communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
