Job Duties

Norfolk State University’s (NSU) Department of Facilities Management provides a campus environment that is conducive to working and learning through systematic maintenance, repair, and renovation and construction of campus buildings, facilities, and infrastructure.

Norfolk State University, Department of Facilities Management, is currently seeking a Roofer.

The successful candidate will perform minor repairs to various types of roofs on campus, with repairs meeting all city and state codes. Perform roof preventative maintenance; inspecting roofs, making photographic documentation, cleaning roof drains, removing debris and maintaining watertight roofs. Keeping a daily accurate inventory of all tools and equipment. Performing daily review and timely responses to email and telephone messages. Performing other related duties as assigned. The successful candidate will promote and practice safe work habits to achieve an accident free work environment in accordance with state OSHA rules and must be available to respond to after normal working hours emergency calls to perform vital carpentry repairs.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Considerable knowledge of and experience in repairing roofs, roof systems and structures.
2. Demonstrated ability to climb ladders and perform routine inspections on normal or high elevation roofs.
3. Demonstrated ability to utilize roofing material to include felt, shingles, strips, flashing, vents, and adhesives and application materials.
4. Demonstrated ability to interface effectively, both verbally and in writing, and provide quality customer service.
5. Ability to respond to emergencies both before and after business hours.
6. Previous experience inspecting roofs, windows, and walls for serviceability.
7. High School diploma or GED or equivalent combination of training and education that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
8. General computer knowledge required.
9. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Demonstrated skill in reading schematics, blueprints, and various structure diagrams in efforts to ascertain the status and efforts needed in repairing/maintaining various roof systems.
