Job Description

This is a tenure track position at the Assistant/Associate Professor rank. We are looking for a generalist with a specialization in American Politics. Preference would be given to candidates who can develop a course in Environmental Justice with a special emphasis on Civic Engagement, supervise the department's internship program, and provide Online instructions for course delivery. This is a full-time, tenure track, academic year (nine-month) appointment beginning August 2024.


Department of Political Science

The Department of Political Science at Norfolk State University offers a B.A. in Political Science as well as a minor. Although the Department is interested in developing new courses, however, currently we offer courses primarily in American Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, Public Administration, Urban Planning, and Pre-Law. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for all students regardless of their background. Candidates must include a statement that reflects their commitment to diversity initiatives and/or experience working with students from underrepresented groups.

Job Duties

  • Teach undergraduate courses in American government
  • Develop new instructional materials, techniques, course offerings, or major revisions of existing courses
  • Actively engage in research/scholarship and grantsmanship; engage in exemplary teaching; collegially engage with faculty and other members of the university community
  • Administer internship programs
  • Demonstrate multicultural competence including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations and create an educational environment that affirms commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in American Politics or a related field at the time of employment. A terminal degree is required.
  • Experience and/or evidence of teaching and scholarly activity in one or more of the areas highlighted in the Job Description.
  • Commitment to, or evidence of diversity, equity, and inclusion.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in curriculum development, preferably in Environmental Justice and/or Civic Engagement.
  • Experience in grantsmanship and research that is commensurate with employment at the rank of assistant or associate professor
  • Demonstrated experience in student advisement.
  • Experience administering internships.
  • Experience in online teaching, preferably using Blackboard.
  • Ability to teach a capstone course.
