This position is paid by the hour and is limited to working an average of 28 hours per week. Also, there are no paid benefits associated with this employment opportunity.

The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) is on mission to provide the best customer experience possible as we build Virginia’s workforce helping qualified people of all backgrounds start businesses and work in their chosen fields. As a Licensing Specialist, you will play a key role in Virginia’s economic vitality. The Licensing Specialist processes applications and changes for licensure/certification from businesses and individuals for the regulatory boards assigned to each section. This position provides telephone coverage and provides thorough and accurate information related to the statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures for the boards with which assigned.

In this position, you will serve as a Licensing Specialist for Board sections, i.e. Contractors, Real Estate, Barbers and Cosmetology, Architects, Engineers, Land Surveyors, Asbestos, Lead, Home Inspectors, Wastewater Operators, etc. While the immediate need is for the Contractors section, this posting will be used to fill multiple wage positions.

As part of The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR), you will play a critical role in the economic vitality of Virginia by helping qualified people start businesses and work in their chosen fields. DPOR is an executive branch agency under the Secretary of Labor for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our regulatory boards are comprised of practitioners and citizens appointed by the Governor and are responsible for regulating certain professions and occupations, ranging from architects and contractors to cosmetologists and professional wrestlers. We protect the public by verifying minimum competency, investigating complaints, and upholding professional compliance with state laws and regulations.

TELEWORK OPTIONS: Please note that this position may be eligible for limited telework and is not a full-time telework position. Upon hire into this position, the agency requires the incumbent to be in the position for 90 days before a specific telework schedule may be submitted for consideration.

Minimum Qualifications

• Strong attention to detail.
• Ability to follow verbal and written directions.
• Ability to analyze and compare information, draw conclusions, exercise discretion and judgment in eligibility determinations.
• Ability to work as a team member with limited supervision while handling multiple tasks.
• Customer service experience with exceptional customer service skills.
• Experience with computer software applications.
• Experience with the preparation of written correspondence.

Additional Considerations

• Experience with Microsoft Excel and data entry preferred
• Experience in a regulatory environment preferred
