Job Duties

The Virginia Military Institute is the nation’s oldest state-sponsored Senior Military College, and a premier institute for leadership development, committed to exceptional preparation of citizen-soldiers, the blending of research with education, and superb educational programs in cyber and national security.

The DoD-funded Cyber Defense Laboratory (CyDef Lab) at VMI is a conduit to grow a pathway of the next generation of cyber leaders. As such, students undergo rigorous education, with an emphasis in cybersecurity and leadership training in a dynamic, predictive, and responsive program. Integral to CyDef Lab is helping to build increased workforce diversity and providing extensive experiential learning with state-of-the-art tools and devices.

The CyDef Lab is looking for a Security Operations Center (SOC) Manager to join the team. As the Security Operations Center Manager in the CyDef Lab you take responsibility for our new Security Operation Center to serve as an educational laboratory for our students and to provide service to the community.

Key responsibilities and functions:
• Lead, develop and manage the Security Operations Center.
• Work with the CyDef Lab team towards expansion of SOC Cloud research scenario development for attack/defense scenarios.
• Mentor students in both technical and non-technical aspects of cyber, including cyber risk and analysis, cyber policy and management, cyber operations, and social/behavioral aspect of cyber.
• Be responsible for security event monitoring, management, and response.
• Ensure incident identification, assessment, quantification, reporting, communication, mitigation, and monitoring.
• Ensure compliance to SLA, process adherence and process improvisation to achieve operational objectives.
• Responsible for team and vendor management, overall use of resources and initiation of corrective action where required for Security Operations Center.
• Play a significant role in the development of the future roadmap of the SOC.
• Perform threat management, threat modelling, identify threat vectors and develop use cases for security monitoring.
• Creation of reports, dashboards, metrics for SOC operations.
• Support other information security services provided by the CyDef Lab.

Minimum Qualifications

• Proof of US Citizenship or permanent residency.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical and computer engineering, or related areas.
• Experience in managing a Security Operations Center with excellent knowledge of SOC operations.
• 2-3 years’ experience in leading security incident response and remediation operations.

Additional Considerations

Salary is based on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time position with competitive salary and benefits package. This position is fully funded by a DoD grant for the first two years and may be extended based on securing additional funds. This position is expected to be performed on-site.
