Job Duties
Based out of a designated Correctional Facility in the Eastern Region, the Regional Medical Director provides supervision of medical practitioners and coverage at all Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) facilities within the Eastern Region.
Position provides interval medical practitioner and practice performance reviews to assure medical providers are meeting appropriate standards of care.
Assists the Chief Medical Officer and medical practitioners in responding to litigation from inmates.
Performs assessments, participates in quality improvement initiatives, and develops and reviews medical guidelines, policies, and procedures.
Develops expectations and monitors metrics for medical practitioners for each facility.
Communicates as needed with the Chief Medical Officer, Regional Nurse Manager, Regional Health Service Administrator, and other Departmental and facility staff to coordinate medical services and initiatives.
Assists in the provision of on call and direct patient care coverage of all facilities.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge and skills to evaluate the performance of independent providers in the VADOC. Willing and able to provide feedback on practice patterns and evidence-based practices. Ability to provide peer review and continuing medication education. Strong interpersonal skills and the communication both orally and in writing. Ability to supervise medical staff and independent practitioners across the VADOC healthcare system.
Current Virginia medical license. Board certification or eligible in primary care or related field. Proficiency in medical policies, practices, and procedures.
Experience supervising/managing medical providers and other clinicians in a medical setting.
Additional Considerations
Extensive experience as a practicing physician.
Experience in correctional medicine
Additional faculty with electronic health records and telemedicine
