Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) seeks a Registered Dental Hygienist that is self-motivated and creative. The Dental Hygienist will help manage a mobile school based dental sealant program in the Piedmont Health District.
Duties include working with the school nurses and administration, supporting, and screening school children, providing preventive services were requested: prophy’s, applying dental sealants and fluoride, educating children and parents, promoting the program, and working with local public and private dentists in the district to refer children with treatment needs.
The VDH Dental Hygienist will practice according to remote supervision per the Regulations of the Board of Dentistry and work under the direction of a Virginia licensed Dentist.
This position requires self-motivation and creativity and is performed under the consultation and guidance of the immediate supervisor and clinical supervision of a licensed VDH dentist as required by law. Under remote supervision, the position will work without the direct or general supervision of a dentist which will require independent decisions to be made in the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical programs.
Duties to include working with a Dental Assistant to scheduling school patients: answering phone/questions regarding services offered; registering child patients in electronic database, keying services provided, verifying insurance coverage or other program eligibility; posting payments & making insurance coverage or adjustments. Creating patient charts & encounters; maintaining patient records; maintaining inventory of supplies and cleaning/sterilizing operatory/instruments in compliance with agency policy/procedures & all relevant OSHA laws & procedures.
Assure adherence to all relevant state and Federal law including OSHA & HIPPA. Independently perform activities in support of health district; interview clients and/or parents to determine eligibility; complete intake forms and submit insurance billing. Submits all documentation as necessary to obtain reimbursement.
Equipment management: The position will also assist in maintaining portable dental equipment.
In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $500 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of the skills/practices of dental hygiene.
Must be licensed by the VA Board of Dentistry.
Regulations require 2 years work experience as a Dental Hygienist
Ability to communicate effectively in writing
Additional Considerations
Previous experience working with pediatric patients and providing preventive care (sealants, fluoride, prophy)
English/Spanish preferred
