Job Duties

**This is an hourly-wage (max 29 hrs/wk position with no benefits and limited to 1500 hours a year.**

The Virginia Health District seeks to hire an enthusiastic Dental Assistant. As a Dental Assistant, supporting and assisting the licensed Dental Hygienist who manages a mobile school based dental sealant program in a health district. Duties include working with the school administrations, supporting, and assisting; screening school children, preventive services where requested, applying dental sealants, educating children and parents, promoting the program, and working with local public and private dentists in the district to refer children with treatment needs.

Dental Sealant Program- Provide 4-handed dental assistant support. Duties include chair side assisting and recording; assisting with patient management; cleaning operatory, dental instruments, and equipment; assisting at education events associated with the program.

Scheduling school patients: answering phone/questions regarding services offered; registering child patients in electronic database, keying services provided, verifying insurance coverage or other program eligibility; posting payments & making insurance coverage or adjustments. Creating patient charts & encounters; maintaining patient records; maintaining inventory of supplies and cleaning/sterilizing operatory/instruments in compliance with agency policy/procedures & all relevant OSHA laws & procedures.

Assure adherence to all relevant state and Federal law including OSHA & HIPPA. Independently perform activities in support of district dental hygienist; interview clients and/or parents to determine eligibility; complete intake forms and submit insurance billing. Submits all documentation as necessary to obtain reimbursement. The position will also assist in maintaining portable dental equipment.

Wage employees are subject to the following conditions of employment:
• Wage employees serve at the will and pleasure of the appointing authority.
• Continuing employment is based on available funding and business need.
• Wage employees are not covered by the provisions of the Virginia Personnel Act. Therefore, they are not eligible for benefits which are provided to salaried employees, such as leave credits, holiday pay, insurance, access to the grievance procedure, etc.
• Wage employees are paid only for the hours they actually work.
• Virginia state law currently requires that agencies not permit wage employees to work in excess of 29 hours per week on average over the course of a year. Wage employees may not work for VDH beyond 1,500 hours during the period of May 1 – April 30 of the following year (the Standard Measurement Period).
• Once a wage employee works the maximum of 1,500 hours during the Standard Measurement Period, the employee may be rehired as a wage employee of VDH only after the next Standard Measurement Period has begun.
• Wage employees are eligible to apply for all classified positions for which recruitment has been initiated, including those limited to State Employees Only.
• If a wage employee becomes employed in a classified position, he/she will be eligible to purchase retirement credit for the time worked as a wage employee.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
Computer skills
Experience working with dentist or dental hygienist providing ‘4-handed dental’ services
