Job Duties

The NSU Preschool Academy provides a developmentally appropriate program for children ages three to five years old to NSU student-parents and the community at large. Additionally, it serves as a training and research facility for undergraduate and graduate students of various academic programs.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

 

  • Implement developmentally- and age-appropriate best practices, methods, and various teaching and learning techniques used in an early childhood classroom setting.
  • Create a healthy and flexible early childhood classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth.
  • Supervise children within school environment and out-of-classroom activities.
  • Establish standards of student behavior needed to maintain a thriving learning environment.
  • Evaluate and assess children’s physical social/emotional, cognitive, and language growth and development.
  • Establish and maintain effective rapport with staff, parents/caregivers, and college students.
  • Monitor and supervise Practicum and work-study students.
  • Attend ongoing professional development and staff meetings.
  • Perform duties and responsibilities in compliance with Virginia Department of Education (VDOE)and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
  • Maintains professional competence by attending professional development training and staff meetings.
  • Assist in responsibility for the health and welfare of children within the school environment.
  • Conduct parent/teacher conferences.
  • Participate in family engagement activities.
  • Assist with assessing classroom needs.
  • Assist with maintain building and grounds safety.
  • Ensure University, Department, and Preschool policies and procedures are followed.
  • Collaborate with the NSU School of Education and the Early Childhood/Elementary & Special Education department’s faculty and staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Elementary Education, Special Education, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 1 year teaching experience with young children.
  • Knowledge of NAEYC accreditation standards.
  • Knowledge of VDOE childcare licensure requirements.
  • Current pediatric and adult CPR, First Aid, and AED.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse populations(staff, parents/caregivers, partner agencies, and other service providers).

Additional Considerations

  • Eligible for VA Teacher’s license.
  • Experience or knowledge of STREAMin3 curriculum.
  • Experience or knowledge of PALS Assessment.
