Job Duties
Special Education Teachers are responsible for providing quality instruction that meets the needs of the student in the areas of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Educational Diploma (GED). Additionally, required to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and program certification requirements. Position is required to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and program certification requirements. Position provides individual and group instruction to adult student inmates with special needs. Successful candidate will maintain classroom, equipment, and inventories; ensure compliance with all DOC regulations; maintain accurate records and submit timely reports; and manage and supervise aides and students in a classroom setting.
Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to facilitate other instructors. The ability to engage students with special needs in one-on-one teaching of all the five subjects and supervise students with special needs and aides in a classroom setting; the ability to maintain accurate records. Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult special education. Must possess working knowledge of all facets of the basic adult and special education field, adult literacy and computer software appropriate for program needs. Demonstrated competency in the relevant field of current licensure.
Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in a relevant educational field, preferably a major or minor in special education.
Experience teaching children with special needs is required.
Licensure: Must possess a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License from the Virginia Department of Education with an endorsement in Special Education or qualify for reciprocity from another state and without deficiencies. License in 'special education' is required.

Additional Considerations
Master’s degree from accredited college or university in a relevant educational field, preferably a major or minor in special education.
Prefer experience teaching children/adults/youth with special needs and experience of policy and procedures governing special education in a correctional or alternative education setting.
Knowledge and experience in a correctional education classroom management. Must have the ability to supervise students with special needs and inmate aides, and demonstrated ability to facilitate other instructors in the correctional facility.
Prefer experience teaching adults and or youth with special needs in a correctional or alternative education setting. Experience of Department of Corrections' institutional policies and procedures. The ability to supervise students and inmate aides with special needs in a correctional facility.
