About the Program:

The STARBASE program is designed for fifth grade students, with the purpose of working with them to increase their interest and skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STARBASE students will participate in challenging activities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Students are immersed in a unique classroom experience for 5 days where all activities are student- centered, hands-on, encourage higher-order thinking and incorporate STEM applications into a relevant "real world" setting.

Purpose of Position:

To assist the STARBASE Director in developing and implementing the STARBASE program for Virginia.

Job Duties:

80% - Curriculum Development and Instruction:
o Assist in developing and implementing the STARBASE program;
o Develop STARBASE curriculum and course outlines for instruction;
o Formulate learning objectives, plans, designs and program development prior to the start of participating schools attending;
o Instruct others and evaluate the efficacy of delivery;
o Ability to effectively co-teach, using multiple co-teaching methods, with all staff members;
o Organize and maintain inventory of learning materials.

15% - Policy Development:
o Assist with the development of policies and procedures;
o Assist Program Director with problem solving;
o May prepare oral and/or written analyses and recommendations for program improvement;
o Assist with annual program evaluations, data collection, and data analysis for program improvement;
o Completion of annual DHRM/DMA required training;
o Complies with all applicable safety rules, standards and regulations.

5% - Serves as Liaison:
o Assist with the development of partnerships;
o Assist in developing and maintain an active public relations and outreach programs;
o Provide additional resources for teachers;
o Assist those teachers who attend STARBASE.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Minimum Qualifications

*Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in a STEM or Education field;

Knowledge in math, science, aerospace, or related field;

Must be highly motivated and have the ability to work as a team member;

Considerable knowledge of instructional design;

Thorough knowledge of the techniques and methods of planning, organizing, and preparing instructional materials;

Ability to instruct others, to assess training needs; to formulate learning objectives and describe optimal means of accomplishing them; to create and evaluate training objectives, requirements, and effectiveness of delivery;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;

Experience in curriculum development required.

*Education requirement is in accordance with DoD instruction 1025.07.

Additional Considerations

A valid state education certification is preferred;

Experience in elementary education is preferred.
