Job Duties

The Virginia Military Institute Office of Career Services (OCS) is accepting applications for the Assistant Director of Experiential Learning and Employer Relations. Reporting to the Director of Career Services, the Assistant Director performs the following responsibilities:

• Builds partnerships between the Institute and external communities (public, private, and not-for-profit entities) and the alumni agency emphasizing development and marketing to expand experiential learning and full-time employment opportunities.
• Manage all on-Post recruiting including career fairs.
• Develops, delivers, and updates informational programs and resources on internships, including how to find them and how to succeed during them.
• Assists in the development of a student application, approval, and tracking process for internships in partnership with VMI faculty and career services director.
• Instructs LS 350/351 (Leadership and Career Development) courses.
• Promotes use of OCS technology resources, including online career resources among cadets, faculty, and alumni.
• Assists with vetting incoming internship listings from employers via Handshake to make sure they are legitimate and good opportunities for VMI students.
• Serves as an informational and instructional resource for faculty and cadets seeking information about internships.
• Coordinates the development of an OCS group presence on LinkedIn, Facebook & Instagram and educates cadets on building effective online presence.
• Use creativity in developing new programs that increase students' opportunities for experiential learning, such as job shadowing or micro-internships.
• Engages in cross training efforts related to office technology and administrative functions to support the mission of the OCS programs.
• Actively engages with VACE, conducts benchmarking activities with other institutions to identify best practices which might be used to expand and improve internships and employer relations at VMI.
• Engages in ongoing professional development that will include an annual individualized plan for increasing skills, knowledge and professional proficiencies.
• Participates in some evening and weekend events as scheduled in advance.
• Represents the OCS at events and performs other duties as assigned to support the mission of the OCS.


Minimum Qualifications

• At least a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
• Three years of professional experience either in an educational setting or industry-specific position(s).
• Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence others while maintaining professionalism & balancing the objectives of all stakeholders.
• Expertise with computer and web-based applications is necessary with desired experience using MS Office Professional software and web site software.
• Demonstrated ability to train and guide staff (cadets and professional) to ensure excellent customer service and accomplish team goals.
• Demonstrated skills with web tools and technologies supporting career services are preferred.

Additional Considerations

• Master’s degree in business, communication, higher education administration, human resource management or related field, along with related experience.
• Recruiting and marketing experience desired.
• Knowledge of and experience in program assessment/evaluation and learning outcomes.
• Also preferred are a collaborative and team-oriented work style, demonstrated flexibility and adaptability, as well as the ability to effectively multi-task in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
