Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Right of Way (ROW) Division is seeking to fill one (1) Right of Way Agent I position in the Southeast Region (Hampton Roads District and Richmond District). This is an entry level position on the Southeast Region’s Right of Way Plans and Estimates team. This candidate must be willing to gain advanced knowledge about all Right of Way disciplines and associated bodies of knowledge (laws, policies and procedures). This candidate must be willing to participate in cross-training rotations with other VDOT Divisions, which will include field work and a variable work schedule, to gain an understanding of the role other VDOT Divisions have in the project development process.

Note: This position supports the SE Region and can sit in either the Hampton Roads (Suffolk) or Richmond District (Colonial Heights).

Minimum Qualifications

  • The ability to work in a team environment or individually and the ability to focus on customer needs is required.
  • This candidate must have the ability to conduct research, prepare reports, and make presentations.
  • The successful candidate will be skilled at performing basic mathematics, solving problems and possess the ability to learn quickly.
  • This candidate will be independently motivated and possess the ability to learn how to apply basic knowledge of plan reading.
  • The ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative approaches to problems is also required.
  • This candidate must possess knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services, including customer needs, assessment, meeting quality standards and evaluating customer satisfaction.
  • The ability to resolve disputes, complaints, and conflicts effectively and tactfully is also required.
  • This candidate must have the ability to organize, plan, and prioritize work and the ability to effectively and correctly identify and solve problems.
  • Additionally, the selected candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills and be skilled with personal computers and associated systems, particularly Microsoft Office and financial management software.
  • A valid Driver’s License is required.

Additional Considerations

  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Business Administration, Real estate or related field desired.

VDOT is an emergency operation agency. Positions physically working within Central Office locations may be designated upon request and coordination among the respective District Engineer or Administrator and Chief. Assignments are updated annually. Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment.
