This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the WIC grant. The availability of funding is scheduled for review annually and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.

VDH's Crater Health District is a system of seven health departments in south central Virginia. The district begins 23 miles south of Richmond and extends south to the North Carolina state border. With more than 125,000 people with varying health needs living in our district, we work to build resilient communities throughout the cities of Petersburg, Hopewell, and Emporia, as well as the counties of Greensville, Surry, Sussex Dinwiddie, and Prince George.

The WIC Nutritionist Assistant provides services to clients in a variety of settings within a district. Characteristic activities: accurately interviews clients to obtain proof of identification and proof of residency, and to calculate income eligibility, according to state guidelines; reviews participant's rights/responsibilities; contacts participants regarding appointments; schedules appointments; provides timely customer service in regards to answering phone calls/ returning phone messages and walk-in clients.

Under the guidance of a Nutritionist and/or Nutritionist Associate, obtains health and diet information from clients and provides low risk nutrition education according to protocols developed by Nutritionist. Independently schedules WIC appointments, maintains WIC records, compiles WIC reports, secures and verifies information needed for WIC income eligibility determination. Instructs clients about program guidelines and assists with WIC draft distribution.

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience interviewing and collecting client information
• Demonstrated experience providing information and/or guidance to clients
• Experience using computer systems
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients and work well as a part of a team.

Additional Considerations

• Additional training or course work in dietetics, food services or a related field.
• Some experience in food production or in a nutrition program.
• Experience in obtaining blood samples or finger sticks from infants, children, and women.
