Job Duties

The Science Museum of Virginia is currently seeking a Part-Time Retail Generalist to join our Retail and Food Services team to serve visitors in our Museum Store, Grab-and-Go Café and Dome Concession Stand.

As a Retail Generalist, you will readily engage with visitors by providing excellent customer service. This position is multifaceted and crucial to the smooth operation of our team. Duties include accurately operating the cash register while performing various sales transactions in a fast-paced environment; restocking and creatively displaying merchandise; assisting with receiving and ticketing merchandise; and performing opening and closing procedures. Communication skills are critically important, as is attention to detail. If you are someone who is interested in science, outgoing, and enjoys working with the public we want you on our team!

This position requires flexibility in scheduling with availability on weekdays between 9:00AM to 5:30PM. Additional availability is required for weekends, holidays and occasional evenings.

Please note that this is a part-time position and hours will vary each week based on operations but no more than up to 29 hours a week on average with a maximum of 1500 hours in a 12-month period. No state benefits are provided.

Minimum Qualifications

An ideal candidate will possess considerable knowledge in specialty retail sales, direct customer service, heavy cash handling, and computerized register operation is required. Excellent communication skills and the ability to assess customers’ needs and suggest solutions to their questions. Be self-motivated, work well independently and as part of a team, enjoy working with children and be comfortable with crowds. The ability to perform basic math computations, the ability to stand for long periods of time, lift and move heavy objects (50 pounds or greater), and work well under pressure is essential. Availability to work weekdays, weekends and state, federal and local holidays is required.

Additional Considerations

Experience in cash register daily reconciliation and experience in opening/closing procedures. An interest in science and food service experience is a plus. Spanish language proficiency and/or ASL also is a plus.
