Job Duties

Richard Bland College (RBC) is a two-year, residential, liberal arts transfer institution that focuses on preparing students for transfer to highly ranked colleges and universities. The College is a hidden gem located outside the Tri-Cities region—and its rural setting featuring 750+ acres of wetlands, bucolic forest, and the state’s oldest and largest pecan grove.

Richard Bland College of William & Mary is currently seeking an exceptional Sociology Professor to serve in a full-time position (with option for renewal based upon performance and college policy). The primary role of this position is to provide college-level instruction and academic-related activities designed to encourage, support, and enable student success. In addition to teaching sociology at all levels and supporting the development of stronger interdisciplinary ties with other departments, duties include but are not limited to the following:

• Teaching sociology courses, including General Sociology, Social Problems, and other sociology courses in accordance with college policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate competency and commitment to continuous professional development in the learning environment that would contribute to student success.
• Teaching in-seat instruction and/or online instruction for courses on campus or with our high school partners.
• Maintaining school-determined office hours per week for each class.
• Ensuring timely management and response to electronic correspondence from students, administrators, and other school officials.
• Engaging students in relevant discussion and coursework.
• Maintaining and submitting accurate and timely reports for student grades/progress.
• Delivering mid-term and final grades in accordance with the academic calendar.
• Enforcing student conduct policies as outlined in the College Catalog.
• Completing other duties as assigned.
• Embracing a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion

Minimum Qualifications

 Master of Science degree from an accredited institution in sociology or a master’s degree in any field with eighteen (18) graduate credit hours in sociology
 Experience teaching Sociology at college or high school level
 Knowledge and understanding of the characteristics and challenges of first- and second-year college students.
 Communicate effectively with all levels of staff, students, and faculty
 Use relevant technology and learning management systems to effectively facilitate teaching, learning, assessment, and communication.
 Develop and adapt teaching and learning strategies to accommodate traditional and non-traditional students with diverse backgrounds and varied academic competencies.

Additional Considerations

• Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) in Sociology
• At least two years of experience teaching in a higher education environment, preferably at the junior college/community college level
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness, including the ability to effectively respond to the academic needs of learners from diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences
