Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources is the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in Virginia. As the SHPO, DHR administers a number of federal programs. DHR is also a state agency in the Natural and Historic Resources Secretariat. DHR fosters, encourages, and supports the stewardship and use of Virginia’s significant architectural, archaeological, and historic resources as valuable assets for the economic, educational, social, and cultural benefit of citizens and communities.

DHR is seeking a self-motivated professional to serve as a grant coordinator for the VA 250 Preservation Fund. The selected candidate will serve as the primary point of contact regarding the coordination of DHR’s VA 250 Preservation Fund, which is a $20,000,000 grant program created to support improvements at significant historic sites and history museums in Virginia in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and the 1776 United States Declaration of Independence (also known as the nation’s semiquincentennial). The position will assist in creating the application materials, coordinate the evaluation of proposals and manage the grant award process. The position will ad-vise internal and external clients and the general public regarding grant applications, management and deliverables; and manage grant funded projects in concert with other DHR staff to ensure the timely completion of projects that meet all grant conditions and requirements. The selected candidate will serve as the primary point of contact regarding the VA 250 Preservation Fund negotiating MOUs between DHR, localities and grantees. The position will offer technical assistance to grantees; adhere to the agency’s standards and grant deadlines; assist in the design of the VA 250 Preservation Fund from the ground up, including the application materials; coordinate the evaluation of proposals and award process; negotiate and draft grant agreements; provide technical assistance to grantees; monitor VA 250 Preservation Fund grant awards and grantee expenses to ensure timely payment of reimbursement requests; conduct site visits and coordinate a review process for each project.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in History, Architecture, Architectural History or Archaeology through an advanced degree in archaeology, anthropology, history, architecture, architectural history or a closely- related major. Successful candidates must have knowledge of American architectural his-tory, history and/or archaeology and land conservation; knowledge of and work experience in one or more historic preservation disciplines; professional experience coordinating a grant-funded preservation project; strong grant experience from grantee and grantor perspectives; have a positive and professional demeanor, be able to balance and organize a heavy workload, communicate processes and goals to shareholders varying in historic preservation experience, and be timely in their work product; skill in the management, and use of environmental data; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to promote teamwork, and to provide timely, efficient and thorough customer centric services. Teleworking options available at the discretion of the supervisor. The selected candidate will be re-quired to complete a criminal background check as a condition of employment. Regular travel throughout the Commonwealth and a valid driver license is required. State vehicle provided.
Strong organizational planning, problem-solving, and collaboration skills are a must. Strong writing and communications skills, and the ability to work effectively with other organizations and diverse audiences. Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office. The selected candidate will be required to complete a criminal background check as a condition of employment. Teleworking options available at the discretion of the supervisor. Regular travel throughout the Commonwealth and a valid driver license is required. State vehicle provided.
