Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

The Director of Placements plays a vital role in determining alternative placements for committed youth, directly contributing to the comprehensive evaluation of our residential unit. This position provides essential administrative leadership and oversight to the CAP (Central Admission and Placement) units, CCRC (Central Classification and Review Committee), and other residential programs, ensuring seamless coordination and supervision. The Director will effectively lead the Central Admission & Placement Unit, ensuring that commitment, assessment, and evaluation processes for alternative and community placements adhere to established policies and procedures. By applying risk, need, and responsivity principles, the Director ensures consistency and accuracy in alternative placement decisions. The position also involves overseeing case management functions across all alternative placement programs, fostering strong collaboration within DJJ and with external partners, and ensuring compliance with the CCRC process and medical protocols.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of juvenile justice systems, programs, and services, including best practices for effective case management.
  • Extensive knowledge of evidence-based programs and services.
  • Extensive knowledge of assessment and evaluation processes within juvenile residential settings, ensuring that resident needs are aligned with the appropriate interventions
  • Knowledge of safety and security procedures, regulations, and standards.
  • Considerable ability to analyze and interpret data, reach logical conclusions, make recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply budget development, data collections and evaluation techniques.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft and other computer software, including spreadsheets, word processing, databases, and presentation packages.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and skills in program evaluation, analysis, and strategic planning; ability to interpret laws, regulations, and policies and determine programmatic impact
  • Experience and ability to develop and deliver trainings, direct the work of others, maintain strong working relationships across divisions with staff at various levels, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to lead professional and interagency task groups, implement effective supervision strategies with staff, and work well under pressure while managing multiple competing priorities.

Additional Considerations

  • Training and/or experience in public administration, criminal justice, or a related field.
  • Considerable and progressive responsible supervisory, administrative experience in a juvenile justice field.
  • Considerable professional experience in program development and implementation, including project leadership.
