About the Agency:
The Virginia Department of Military Affairs is a Commonwealth of Virginia state agency that provides professional and responsive support functions to the Adjutant General of Virginia, the Virginia National Guard, the Virginia Air Guard, and the Virginia Defense Force in order to ensure their ability to support and defend the United States and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The mission of the Virginia National Guard Commonwealth ChalleNGe Youth Academy is to intervene in the lives of 16-18 year old teenagers by providing the values, skills, education, and self-discipline needed to produce responsible, productive citizens, and to do so in a highly structured learning environment.
Purpose of Position:
To supervise cadets and staff on shift and in their platoon at the Commonwealth ChalleNGe Youth Academy. Ensures policy and procedures are followed and daily Operations/Cadet training plan is executed on time.
Minimum Qualifications
Working knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and techniques of Military Drill and Ceremony FM22-5;
Must possess the ability to supervise, communicate, interpret regulations, and exercise independent judgement in enforcing rules and regulations;
Knowledge of leadership principles, human behavior, crisis intervention, non-physical intervention techniques and of methods and techniques to promote safety, physical health, skills, self-esteem, character development, self-restraint, and discipline;
Skills required include team building and team management, enforcing discipline, safety and security mission in a fair and consistent manager, providing effective leadership, shift scheduling, recognizing and defusing potentially volatile situations and developing approaches to sensitive issues; patience, tolerance and flexibility;
A valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record required;
Must be able to work all shifts, weekends, and be flexible with schedule;
Must be able to pass a physical fitness test, which includes: a mile run, sit-up, push-ups, etc.
Additional Considerations
Experience working with at-risk youth strongly desired;
Class A or Class B CDL preferred;
Comprehensive knowledge and skill in providing counseling to cadets when required to improve behavior.

Must have, and maintain, a valid Virginia Driver’s License for the duration of employment.
Must obtain Class B CDL within eleven (11) months of hire.
Must be able to pass a physical fitness test twice annually throughout the duration of employment.
