VDOT Construction is Seeking Senior-Level Construction Inspectors to Drive, Improve, and Maintain Virginia’s Infrastructure!
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Bristol District is offering exciting opportunities in its Construction Program. We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Construction Inspector. In this role, you will independently coordinate, schedule, and inspect all phases of both routine and complex highway construction projects, ensuring the quality of construction in accordance with plans and specifications. Your work will contribute to maintaining a high-quality transportation system for the traveling public.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Senior Construction Inspector, you will:
Ensure construction activities are completed in compliance with contracts, plans, and specifications.
Oversee and perform materials testing to verify the project meets design and quality standards.
Ensure contractors are adhering to safety practices and regulations.
Address and resolve any contractor non-compliance issues.
Monitor and review the project budget to ensure financial compliance.
Supervise erosion and sediment control measures to ensure proper implementation and ongoing maintenance.
Maintain detailed and accurate project records, including daily reports, materials documentation, and other project files.
Communicate effectively with VDOT staff and external stakeholders to ensure project success.
Physical Requirements:
This position involves physically demanding work in the field, including frequent climbing, crawling, stooping, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working in various environments such as heights, confined spaces, and embankments. As part of VDOT’s emergency response operations, this position may require working beyond regular hours during emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications
• Experience with construction methods, materials, equipment, standards, specifications and terminology.
• Experience applying state and federal safety, environmental, and EEO and DBE guidelines
and regulations related to transportation construction.
• Ability to record and maintain detailed project documentation and prepare reports, forms and correspondence.
• Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, construction
contracts and other project management documents.
• Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment, as well as computers and software
applications.
• Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry and ability to
apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments to
construction plans.
• Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment.
• Ability to work independently and oversee and provide technical guidance and training to
other inspectors.
• Ability to work in a team environment.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the general public.

• Experience in a broad range of road and bridge construction inspection activities with a DOT
or a DOT consultant inspection firm.
• Possession of current certifications and completion of fall protection and confined space training.
• DEQ: Inspector for Erosion Sediment Control (ESC IN)
• DEQ: Inspector for Storm Water Management (SWM IN)
• Radiation Safety USDOT HAZMAT Certification (Nuclear Gauge)
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Construction or related field desired.
• Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety
• Soils & Aggregate Compaction
• Experience with inspection of construction projects and activities for roadway construction,
maintenance and structures.
• CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course
• Asphalt Field Level I
• Proficiency in MS Office and AASHTOWare Project (AWP) or other project management
software.
• Guard Rail Installer Training (GRIT)
• Pavement Marking
• Experience overseeing the work of others.
• American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Field Level I (CCWA) OR WACEL Concrete I
