Job Duties
VDOT’s Hampton Roads District has exciting an opportunity available in its Construction section. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Construction Inspector Apprentice vacancy. In a training capacity, you will inspect phases of highway construction and maintenance projects in order to prepare to assume the duties of a construction inspector and provide a quality transportation system for the traveling public.
Note: The availability to work nights and weekends is required for this position. This position will report to the Accomac Residency.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in field conditions such as using testing equipment, lifting, climbing, stooping, working at heights, in confined spaces and making visual observations
- Basic knowledge and understanding of highway construction and contracting
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret construction plans, specifications and contract documents
- Basic knowledge in mathematics such as geometry and trigonometry
- Ability to work in the vicinity and operate devices utilizing low-level ionizing radiation
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with various stakeholders, e.g. contractors, the general public, internal and external government agencies
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to obtain required certifications within 24 months
Additional Considerations
- A combination of training, experience, or education in construction, engineering technology, project management, materials handling, or related field desired

This position is classified as designated to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
