Job Duties

The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is seeking an English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher to provide ELL instruction and services to eligible students.

This is a part time temporary position without benefits working 29 hours per week during not to exceed 1500 hours annually. Working hours are varied based on the needs of the institution.


Responsibilities include:

• Thorough knowledge of English as a Second Language principles, practices, procedures, and assessments (WIDA & ACCESS)
• Ability to assess and document student progress according to best practice, including but not limited to pre-test and post-test assessments, and to use assessment data to guide instruction
• Ability to develop effective instructional strategies and methods and the ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs
• Knowledge of child growth and development
• Knowledge of Special Education processes and IEP development
• Knowledge of technology to enhance communication and learning
• Ability to follow school policies and procedures
• Thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching
• Ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior
• Ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports
• Ability to professionally and adequately communicate through written English language
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, administration, and parents and work using a team approach
• Ability to participate in various student and parent activities, which may occur inside/outside of school hours, as required by the administration
• Preferred - Experience teaching in an educational setting
• Preferred - Proficiency in American Sign Language (Intermediate)

Minimum Qualifications

• A minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree in Teaching Language as a Second Language (TESOL)
• Hold a valid Virginia teaching license issued by the Board of Education with an endorsement in Teaching Language as a Second Language
• Experience in organizing and maintaining student records and documentation
• Prefer experience working with children with hearing loss and/or visual impairments or other disabilities

Additional Considerations

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to interact on a physical level with children and to perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending, and climbing
