Job Duties

The Science Museum of Virginia seeks an energetic Grounds Maintenance Technician to provide general grounds maintenance and upkeep across the Science Museum campus to maintain a clean and safe environment for our guests and staff. This position will be responsible for cleaning, sweeping, washing and maintaining sidewalks, curbs and walkways, mowing the lawn, when necessary, removal of exterior trash daily, cleaning and maintaining the grounds maintenance shop, and keeping the lawn equipment in working order, and assisting Facilities Maintenance as needed. This position will also assist the Horticulturist with maintenance projects including but not limited to watering, pruning, trimming plants, mulching and irrigation maintenance. Alternating weekend schedule are required.

Please note that this is a part-time position and will be scheduled for 29 hours a week on average with a maximum of 1500 hours in a 12-month period . No state benefits are provided. Interested candidates must apply on-line “Virginia Jobs” (RMS) employment site at https://jobs.virginia.gov/.

Minimum Qualifications

General knowledge of professional landscape maintenance practices and grounds equipment and the safe operation of the same. The ability to follow instructions related to breakdown and reassembly of lawn equipment; lift and carry groundskeeping supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis, prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching on a daily basis. Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions year around.

This position also requires the ability to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Valid driver’s license required.

Additional Considerations

At least one year of residential, commercial, municipal, park, or similar turf, horticulture or arboriculture experience is a plus. VDACS Pesticide Registered Technician or Commercial Applicator certification in category 3A or 3B is a plus.
