Job Duties

We have an exciting opportunity for an Electronic Technician Supervisor to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient operation and maintenance of regional transportation management communication systems. The successful candidate will oversee maintenance of freeway Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) assets, provide technical assistance and guidance in evaluating and resolving technical ITS problems, collaborate with technical and engineering staff to facilitate operation and maintenance of the regional transportation network and oversee consultants and contractors providing ITS systems support and services. In addition, you will maintain and operate regional wide area telecommunications network, ensure team members are trained and proficient in new traffic management technologies and equipment in traffic management systems and provide input on transportation management and ITS technologies for integration into the regional system. You will also manage and direct maintenance and repair of freeway ITS devices, including cameras, gates, and control devices and ensure compliance with established safety standards, VDOT policies and procedures, and ITS equipment operational standards.


Core responsibilities include:

  • Oversight: Coordinate with and support field technicians and contractors to implement work plans. Lead field staff and monitor contractors performing maintenance and operation of freeway traffic management equipment and communication networks. Maintain records and prepare reports. Oversee and verify consultant work performing operations and maintenance support. Coordinate the installation of communication lines to new and relocated signals. Monitor and maintain communications to ITS equipment in the field. Oversee implementation of preventive maintenance program for regional transportation system communication components and freeway ITS devices.
  • Budgets and Operational plans: Assist with development of operational plans, budgets and expenditure documentation for regional transportation management systems to include Interstate ITS, Roadway Lighting and communications. Assist in development of disaster recovery plans. lmplement and maintain emergency response plan.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with the public concerning operations and problems with traffic signals. Communicate and interact with the police department concerning traffic signal work and repairs.
  • Maintain tunnel industrial plant Engineering Control systems, programmable programmable logic controllers, variable message and speed signs, internal phone systems, PBX equipment, and tunnel internal networks.
  • Responsible for ensuring effective operation and maintenance of tunnel traffic management and communications systems.
  • Oversees maintenance of tunnel facility ITS assets and systems providing technical guidance and assistance in evaluating and resolving technical ITS issues.
  • Maintain UHF/VHF radio systems and emergency rebroadcast Systems, SCADA systems, over height detecting systems, cameras and display equipment, and lane use signals.
  • Maintain and operate regional wide and local area telecommunications network and ensure team members are properly trained and proficient in new traffic management technologies and equipment and fiber communications plant.


VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess a solid understanding of network infrastructures and hardware with a good understanding of network principals, protocols and practices.
  • Proven success communicating technical information orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated success supervising a team with responsibility for planning, coordinating and prioritizing multiple assignments and competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated success establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success maintaining detailed and accurate records.
  • Demonstrated success establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience supervising team members performing electronic maintenance and repairs to complex ITS and traffic control systems or other similar complex electronic systems.
  • Possess an electronics certification from accredited school preferred or received training in electronic theory, fundamentals, and principals in an “Advanced Electronic” field and 2 years of directly related experience.
  • College degree in electronics technology.
