Job Duties
Virginia State University is seeking dynamic applicants for Residence Director to join the
Department of Residence Life and Housing. This position is responsible for the overall administration and operations of one or two residence halls consisting of 50 – 500 students.
The Residence Hall Director will provide a safe, secure, academic, and support services to
VSU students residing in campus housing; manage associated housing databases and financial reporting systems.
Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to develop and coordinate residential communities of undergraduate and graduate students in residence halls that seek to augment and extend the
intellectual climate of the University.
Must show demonstrated working knowledge of the principles of student counseling, housing, and business management of a residence hall.
Must demonstrate knowledge of university policies related to student services and of safety and
environmental principles in a residential setting.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally with students and parents.
Demonstrated ability to maintain relationships with people of diverse backgrounds who have
different needs.
Demonstrated ability to supervise the work of others and to evaluate the effectiveness of services being provided and to initiate appropriate change when necessary.
Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of students and gain their support and cooperation
along with the ability to supervise and work effectively with professional and non-professional
personnel.
Demonstrated analytical, written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills. Attention to
detail.
Experience with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and similar computer programs. Working knowledge of the principles of student counseling, housing and business management of a residence hall; knowledge of university/college policies related to student services and of safety and environmental principles in a residential setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or any combination of education, experiences and training.Experience working with young adults in an educational setting.
Ability and willingness to work within a fast paced, student-centered environment.
Commitment to diversity and demonstrated ability to work with diverse persons.
