Job Description
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) manages the administrative and academic information technology resources for Norfolk State University. The Office of Information Technology (OIT) empowers University students, faculty, and staff by providing quality information technology leadership, resources, services, and support. The office invites applicants for the position of Senior Helpdesk Supervisor.


Overview:
The Access Control Engineer, reporting to the Director of Technical Services, will work with the NSU Police Department, Facilities Management, OIT stakeholders and building owners to manage the physical access control system for the main campus. This position will be designing, implementing, and maintaining the physical access system that controls access to facilities by managing user credentials, configuring access control devices like card readers and panels, and ensuring the system functions properly. This includes troubleshooting issues, integrating with other systems, and staying updated on industry best practices.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assigns access rights based on established protocol; configures schedules, holidays, time codes; alarm routing; and other functions. Trains others as needed.
• Assists in identifying and resolving issues with access control software by working with vendors and internal departments to update and troubleshoot software, and escalates issues as needed.
• Identifies issues and responds to outages, equipment failures, breakages, etc.
• Processes requests for card access and modifications; monitors, tracks, and evaluates card access activity system wide.
• Assists in policy and procedure development related to Access Control; performs research on best practices and stays current on related regulations.
• Identify current and emerging technology issues including security trends, vulnerabilities, and threats.
• Educate and train staff on access control best practices
• Automate responses where determined reasonable.
• Manage projects with vendors to repair, maintain and expand capabilities for the access control system environment.
• Assists in the development of emergency response protocols as it relates to access control.

Minimum Qualifications

- Extensive knowledge of access control systems; implementation, administration, and integration with other sources of identity.
- Knowledge of networking concepts (i.e. IP, DHCP, DNS) in a Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft 365 integrated environment.
- Understanding automation concepts to speed up routine actions.
- Electronic access control hardware management and troubleshooting.
- Must have experience interacting with other people in a customer-oriented service manner.
- Having good interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills is essential. Must be able to work in a collaborative, team environment.
- Must be a "self-starter" and be able to proactively identify problems (or potential problems) and propose solutions.
- Initiative and creativity are important qualities to make this position successful.
- Ability to create and maintain customer satisfaction and express conclusions in a clear, technically sound manner on matters associated with information technology.
- Participate in collaborative initiatives which foster the mutual exchange of knowledge and expertise.
- High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of training and education that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Physical Security and / or access control experience in an institutional or campus environment.
- Experience troubleshooting and maintaining access control hardware including, electronic door readers, control panels and boards, and communication back to a central software system.
- Experience in administrating and troubleshooting an access control software platform ex. AccessIT! / Avigilon / Genetec / Lenel etc.

Additional Considerations

• 4 or more years of experience administrating access control systems.
• Bachelor’s degree in related field or Information Technology, Computer Science etc. or equivalent combination of training and education that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities
• Certifications for access control systems (any vendor)
• Virginia DCJS License a plus but not required
• Experience working in a higher education environment
