An exciting employment opportunity is available for a Trades Technician II who possesses a foundational understanding of various building trades experience in carpentry, plumbing, or electrical and knowledge of the basic procedures, techniques and proper use of hand tools and materials in those trades. The Trades Technician will follow policies and procedures for the management and upkeep of NCI buildings and grounds to ensure facilities meet all local and state requirements for safety and access of the buildings. This position is considered part-time with no benefits and not to exceed an average of 29 hours per week, and located at New College Institute in Martinsville, Virginia.

Job Summary/Objectives: The part-time Trades Technician II position will be responsible for performing duties such as but not limited to assisting with completing tasks for preventative maintenance and upkeep on alarm and security systems, mechanical equipment, vehicles, and on equipment inventory; performing landscaping duties to include maintaining outdoor areas such as sidewalks, garden beds, courtyards, and removing landscape debris; executing carpentry, plumbing ,and electrical, and HVAC tasks; and installing and repairing flooring, drywall, and other structural elements. This position will also be responsible for assisting in maintaining the cleanliness of common areas, elevators, stairwells, lobbies, and hallways; washing walls, partitions, furniture, baseboards and other surfaces; regularly vacuuming and mopping floors; operating specialized equipment such as floor buffers, scrubbers, carpet shampooers, leaf blowers, pressure washes and extractors to ensure floors and exterior areas are well maintained; daily removal and disposal of trash/recycling; and cleaning interior and exterior glass walls and windows. The Trades Technician II will also assist with thoroughly cleaning and restocking restrooms and assist with cleaning and sanitizing kitchen appliances and surfaces as needed.

The incumbent of this position will also be responsible for following a maintenance schedule and updating the schedule as maintenance tasks are completed; assisting management with ensuring facility inspections run smoothly, and assisting management with securing all required facility licenses and certifications as needed. The incumbent of this position must also report maintenance or landscape issues and hazard and respond to cleaning request to address spills and other emergency maintenance needs.

Minimum Qualifications

· A work history demonstrating knowledge of and experience performing building/grounds maintenance tasks or performing work in the construction trades.
· Experience demonstrating the ability to provide customer service as needed to students, faculty staff, customers, and other stakeholders.
· Experience demonstrating the ability to read, write, and understand and follow instructions
· Experience demonstrating knowledge, skills, and abilities to use a computer to perform basic computing tasks (send/receive email, etc.)

Additional Considerations

· Knowledge of and or experience in commercial cleaning and ability to operate custodial equipment, including floor buffers, carpet cleaners, and other associated cleaning equipment.
· Possession of related trade certifications in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and groundskeeping desirable.
· CPR & First-Aid Certification desirable.
· Possession of a valid driver’s license desired but not required.
