Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Energy’s Mineral Mining program is seeking a Compliance/Assistance Specialist to advance safe and environmentally sound mining of Virginia’s mineral resources through the enforcement of laws and regulations. This position is responsible for conducting safety and reclamation inspections for compliance, investigating complaints and accidents, providing operator assistance in the areas of safety and reclamation, and providing training to mine operators and mine workers within the assigned area.

This position will cover multiple localities, including, Amelia, Brunswick, Charlotte, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottaway, Southampton, and Sussex. The successful candidate must reside in or in the surrounding area or general vicinity of one of the areas listed above. Occasional overnight travel is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in mining, health safety, conservation, reclamation, or related training fields or college-level coursework in natural or environmental sciences, such as: forestry, geology, health and safety, engineering, or reclamation
  • General knowledge of mining reclamation practices and mine safety and health standards
  • Working knowledge of adult education principles
  • Experience interpreting and applying laws, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Experience working without close supervision and making sound independent decisions
  • Strong communicate skills both orally and in writing
  • Strong interpersonal skills with individuals and groups
  • Ability to perform physical tasks in the field (i.e., stooping, crawling, climbing, bending, walking for long distances over rough terrain, working in confined spaces and heights)
  • Must obtain a Mineral Mine Inspector certification within 60 days of employment
  • Valid driver’s license
