Job Duties
Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2027.
CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.
Central State Hospital is currently recruiting Full-Time EVS Technicians to maintain established levels of cleanliness and orderliness in an assigned area by the application of proper methods and materials. Perform routine assignments in accordance with a pre-established pattern using set methods and techniques. Non-routine assignments requiring special treatment are outlined in detail and performed under close supervision.
Job Duties:
- Daily clean floors in assigned areas by sweeping, dust mopping or wet mopping.
- includes moving furniture to clean areas underneath and behind.
- Machine scrubs floor areas using floor scrubbing machines and wet capacity vacuum
cleaners to pick up scrubbing solution and vacuums carpeted areas in accordance with
established schedule.
- Twice a year or more often if needed, perform extensive floor maintenance, stripping
and refinishing of floor areas and shampoo/extraction of carpeted floors.
- Daily clean and disinfect bath and shower areas in individual and administrative
buildings following correct procedures.
- Daily scrub bathroom floors using scrubbing machine and/or deck brush, especially
around commodes.
- Daily wash walls in shower stalls and bathroom areas.
- Daily clean and disinfect basins and commodes.
- Daily polish bright works and mirrors.
- Daily replenish bathroom supplies, towels, toilet tissue, soap, etc.
- Daily cleans/dusts furniture. Spot clean walls daily.
- Cleans windows and venetian blinds.
- Unload clean linen carts and stock linen on shelves upon delivery by laundry but no later
than end of shift.
- Daily cleans housekeeping equipment at the end of the workday and straightens up
janitorial closets.
- Check equipment and report inoperative equipment to supervisor as soon as it is
discovered.
- Weekly washes beds and mattresses in individual living areas.
- Thoroughly clean refrigerators, microwave ovens, and rethermalization units at least
weekly.
- Twice daily in accordance with schedule gather trash from areas and dispose of it in
appropriate dumpster and clean trash receptacles inside and out and replace liners.
- Daily perform outside police of immediate vicinity of assigned building (within 30 feet) to
include entrances and porches.
- Clean overhead areas (ceiling, light fixtures) which may involve climbing ladders as
needed or when instructed by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience in performing cleaning tasks in a systematic manner

- Experience performing cleaning tasks in a mental health facility
