Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH), Office of Drinking Water (ODW), is seeking an Environmental Engineer Senior to join the Lexington Field Office team! This position is located in Lexington and will assist in ensuring safe drinking water for citizens in the Lexington Field Office service area. If you like a more rural setting, the Lexington area has it all!

The primary responsibility for this position is to ensure safe drinking water to the counties of Greene, Page, Rockbridge, Shenandoah and the independent cities of Lexington and Buena Vista. Under Section 32.1-167-176 of the Code of Virginia and the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is required to provide safe drinking water regulations. These functions are initiated and monitored by the inspectors assigned to various regions, and are of critical importance to sustaining a program of inspections to ensure continued compliance with state and federal regulations. This position provides technical assistance to approximately 120 waterworks serving an average population of 70,000 Virginians.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Working knowledge and experience in biology, microbiology, chemistry, engineering principles and practices, and math.
2. Demonstrated ability to make sound engineering decisions.
3. Ability to effectively communicate (written/verbal) in English, including addressing the public and writing technical reports.
4. Demonstrated ability to read and interpret law, regulations, policies, and technical documents.
5. Ability to supervise people
6. Considerable engineering working knowledge in the water aspects of civil, sanitary, environmental, or chemical engineering

Additional Considerations

A BS degree in Civil, Sanitary, Environmental or Chemical Engineering from an accredited college/university is required and an MS degree is preferred. Licensure as a PE in VA is preferred.
