Job Duties

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2027.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.

- Daily clean floors in assigned areas by dust mopping, wet mopping, and/ or auto scrubbing.
- Moving furniture to clean areas underneath and behind, including refrigerators, washers and dryers, wheeled copy machines, or other movable items.
- Use a wet capacity vacuum cleaner to pick up scrubbing solution, or if a flood occurs.
- Vacuum carpeted areas.
- Scheduled use of carpet cleaning equipment: bonneting and extraction as required.
- Strip and wax as required.
- Top scrub and wax as required.
- Deep scrub of all floor types as required, including tiled restrooms and shower areas.
- Corners and edges, including floor condition detailing is required (including expansion joints and elevator tracks). Clean floors in stairwells and elevators.
- Exterior conditions, such as unit porches and building entrances (up to 30-feet) shall be free of gum and shall include periodic scrubbing of concrete with machines and/ or use of a pressure washer and may include the use of a leaf blower at entrances for first impressions.
- Dust once a week for all high and low dust in Stairwells and Main Hallways/Corridors.
- Wall Washing as required in Stairwells and Main Hallways/Corridors.
- Any assigned area that may require a complete cleaning recovery from ceiling down to floor to get area back to a baseline for cleanliness standards, independently or with a recovery team.
- General housekeeping to aid in an area based upon staffing and building needs.

Minimum Qualifications

- Experience in performing cleaning tasks in a systematic manner.
- Experience in Floor Tech work
