Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Taxation Tobacco Tax Unit seeks Collections Representatives to ensure compliance, verify tax license and exemption eligibility as well as clarify tax laws and resolve customer questions through in-bound and out-bound telephone calls. The position assists taxpayers by researching accounts, utilizing multiple databases, as well as a case management system to ensure compliance based on tobacco tax laws.
As a Collections Representative with a focus on Tobacco, you will answer incoming phone calls, make outgoing calls, as well as send and respond to correspondence from businesses applying or renewing ST-10C, and other Tobacco Tax and Liquid Nicotine applications for required licenses for businesses that sell or wholesale tobacco products in the Commonwealth of Virginia. You will be a part of project teams related to any changes in tobacco tax legislation and other duties as necessary while applying critical thinking skills to assist our customers.
This position is in our Main Street Centre Office in downtown Richmond, Virginia.
This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule once fully trained.
The anticipated hiring salary is commensurate with experience, up to $44,192.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience in collections and/or in a call center
Strong customer service skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with diverse populations, including expectational listening, call control, de-escalation techniques, and experience will resolving problems in adversarial situation in a professional manner
Skilled using a computer with a Windows environment, basic troubleshooting, and knowledge of common computer software programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Access
Ability to research and analyze financial/technical information and determine appropriate or alternate course of action using good judgement in decision making
Ability to work independently and in a team environment while adapting to changing business needs
Additional Considerations
Basic knowledge of Virginia State Tax Laws, Rules and Regulations including knowledge of cigarette and tobacco forms, filing requirements and legislative updates.
Local, state or federal government experience
